    Default My Last SPQR Campaign.

Howdy, I just wanted to talk about my last campaign and figure out how other people handle their campaigns.
My Last full SPQR Campaign was in 3.2 I think, I started out as the Julii and fought the Gauls for a long long time before I was able to marshall a force large enough to force them back to strategic points.
I then built forts in the passes and manned the bridges with triarii + archers/velites galore.
I organised my Army then into the following:

Legion, consisting of two Heavy Infantry Battalions:
4 Hastati, 2 Principes, 2 Triarii per Battalion.
This gave each legion lots of infantry. Since the Principes and Triarii were considered heavy and more elite infantry I use them in as little quantity as possible, relying in most battles upon the Hastati to carry the day... needless to say that by the time I had secured Northern Italy I had Silver Chevron Hastati... lots of them.

I then organised Brigades, Each Brigade had three Legions, the would act in close concert with each other and in many occasions fight in the same battles. ( I used Brigade Maneuver Elements, no Legion outside of supporting distance of the others unless it brought a tactical advantage )

Then I put together a Division, consisting of two Brigades, which was later expanded to 4 Brigades.
Then Two Divisions in an Army Group... So soon (Like 60 Years) I had my First Army Group:
    The Legendary Eagles.

Two Divisions, each with four Brigades, each with three Legions, so an Army Group was 24 Legions. This is all Pre-Marian by the way.

First Army held Northern Italy, I concentrated 1st Division and advanced them towards the center of France, holding three key cities and able to supply itself there.
2nd Division Crossed the Alps further North and secured the Danube, then moved West to protect the Flank of 1st, it is here that I forged an Alliance with the Britons, gave them money in return for attacking the Gauls, and soon 2nd Division was sweeping across Gaul next to British War Chariots.
The Gauls Retreated into Spain, forces out the Iberians and Carthaginians.
I bottled them up at the Pyranees, and created the 2nd and 3rd Army Groups.
2nd was to form on Corsica and Sardinia, while 3rd looked after the security of 1st Army's conquests.
The Germans then took this time to invade from the North, and 3rd Army was focused here and repulsed them to the Danube. Where 3rd Began skirmishes with the Dacians, many many intense battles later 3rd Army was fully focuses to the North-East and I built the 1st Reserve Army to garrison and defend my newly conquered territory.

At this time I was making trade with Egypt, Greece, Seleucia, Pontus, Parthia, and Armenia... so I was happy on income.
I built a sizable fleet and launched Operation Bob.
8 turns after the launch of Operation Bob Gaul was annihilated and the entire Iberian Peninsula was mine.
2nd Army then moved North and the 2nd Reserve Army garrisoned Spain.
First Army I transported back to Italy on the fleet in order to be resupplied and to await the Marian Reforms. (They Happened right after I finished Transporting 1st back to Italy.)
Soon 1st and 3rd Army were fully Marian with Early Legionnaires.
    The Following Legion took form:
    1-General/Captain Cavalry Units.
    1-First Cohort
    4-Cohorts
    4-Cohorts
    4-Cohorts
    2-Roman Cavalry
    4-Archer Auxilia

This Army was very expensive, and I cut 2nd in half to help reduce costs, as well as trimming 1st and 2nd Reserves as much as I could.
Then a very bad thing happened.
Brutii were expelled from Greece by an unseen Spartan Army and Rome demanded I conquer Greece in Brutii's stead.

1st Army was launched, my Navy blocking all of Greece's ports and my diplomats enlisted the aid of the Macedonians.
Greece was quickly subdued and my income nearly tripled.
Elements of 1st Reserves were transferred over and 1st Army then looked towards the rich lands of the East.
But it was not to be had, the conquering of Greece made a public outcry that I become the ruler of Rome, I was alienated from the Senate and Scipii and Brutii. Who had Concentrated their Armies around their Captitols.
10 years of bloody fighting before the Civil War was over and I triumphed.
I was extremely fortunate and the Germans nor Dacians never attacked, as 75% of 3rd Army and 2nd Army were recalled to assist 1st in forging the Empire.

Then with a united Rome, 1st Army landed 2 Brigades at Pergamum, while 5 more Brigades secured the land route to Byzantium.
3rd Reserves where created to hold Greece and the territories.
4th Army was created and swiftly took Sicily from Carthage, then sailed West to Souther Italy and attacked Carthage from the West.
Here is the worst defeat to befall my Roman Empire.
As 1st Secured a foothold in Turkey, 3rd Pushed through the Dacians and linked up with elements of 1st on the Mainland. I then doubled the size of 3rd Army, and secured the Ukraine from the Germans.

4th Army was about to invade Carthage, with 1 Division pressing in Africa from the West, another would land at Carthage itself and take the City, demoralizing and slowly crushing the Empire.
The Western Attack was halted, then pushed back to the Line of Departure, the Division never captured Carthage, but they took a great many War Elephants out of the upcoming engagements before they ran back to the boats.
4th Army was reconsituted after the great losses, and 5th Army was created, 4th would concentrate entirely in the West and 5th would sieze Carthage.
I never though the AI could do this, but I siezed Carthage and was pressing swiftly from the west, when a truly massive army that had been hidden in the desert appeared and crushed 5th Army, the Eagles were lost, and 4th was so outflanked they were forced to retreate.

In sheer Anger, I ordered the 2nd Reserve Army to land East of Carthage, 4th Army to resume the Eastward March from the West, 5th Army reconstituted and to land again at Carthago, to ensure Victory a Division from First Army was shipped over along with several of 2nd Army's Brigades who were near port at the time.

Carthage barely managed to hold against the concentrated attacks, and again repulsed the invasion.
3rd Reserves were transferred to Hold 1st Army's gains, and the Entire 1st Army was pulled to Sicily, 2nd Army to Sardinia, 4th held its ground in Africa, 5th would raid along the coast, 2nd Reserves would again march westard and the newly created 6, and 7th Armies would advance first, tiring the Carthaginian Army where then the Veterans of 1st and 2nd would crush them completely.

The total cost to take Carthage is estimated at almost 200,000 Romans, some 150,000 Carthaginians may have fought throughout the entire series of failures.

1st Army returned to Turkey, fully, and set about conquered Seleucia, Pontus, Armenia, and Parthia.
5th, 6th, and 7th Armies advanced to the East and took Egypt in six turns.
3rd Army was increased in size to 6 Divisions Total and tasked with the conquering of Russia.
A slow and steady process which took 8 years, but was well worth it when the Scythian Capitol Fell, and 2 Divisions turned Southward to flank the Parthians.

2nd Army then pushed the Britons, who had broken our long term Alliance, back to Briton. (The had controlled Northern France, the Rhine, Belgium and Denmark.)
2nd then engaged in Operation Sea Otter, far more successfull than the Operation to take Carthage.
The Middle East was taken two turns before Londinium fell.
The last battle of the Campaign was also the last battle of the Britons.

    Ending Army:
    1st Army: The Legendary Eagles

    3rd Army: Wolves of Rome
    Triple Size - 6 Divisions
    4th Army: Iron Horses
    Standard Size - 2 Divisions
    5th Army: The Anvil
Standard Size - 2 Divisions -Rebuilt enough times to be 7 or 8 Divisions if you count the dead.
6th Army: The Hammer of Rome
    STandard Size - 2 Divisions
    7th Army: Egypt's Bane
    Standard Size - 2 Divisions

    1st Reserves: Old Reliables
    Double Size - 4 Divisions
    2nd Reserves: Imperator's Brigade
    Triple Size - 6 Divisions
    3rd Reserves: Unnamed
    Double Size - 4 Divisions

    Total Troops: 600,000+

    Campaign Length: 24 B.C.

    Total KIA: 500,000+
    Total Kills: 1,000,000+ Easily.

Took me total about 4 months to beat, got kinda super easy at the end, but it was really tough at the beginning, letting Carthage have Sicily for so long in the Campaign really made them a bugger to get rid of. (Stupid Scipii)
I still have the sketch for Operation Bob... I thought it was rather funny because I named the beaches whilst I was bored in class...
Steak, Nevada, Bruno, Knife, and Silver beaches. (Where'd I get those names? )

So... anyhow... rate how you think my Campaign went, and tell me about ya'lls please.

I think you'll find SPQR 6.0 and 5.0 much harder than 3.0, there is no diplomacy for one thing. lol

Take alook at my thread stickied above in this forum about caesars writings it has some Roman links on how the Legions were Formed. IN the roman world Legions were individual little armies. Napoleon as you know brought this back and one cannot truly study napoleon without studying the history of Rome. ;-)

Each 20 units army in SPQR or RTW is really A LEGION then Legions can go into an Army, like the Northern Army or EASTERN ARMY etc. But there were no brigades etc back then. and they way you structured your armies isnt historically accurate for the times. If you had fun the old way try the historical way as it will give you more challenge and fun! Basically imagine modern Generals back then? They would use tactics that would be Centuries advanced based on previous knowledge, it more fun IMO to fight like them and limit yourself to the times. In all its up to you, but battalions etc will confuse alot of people who arent used to the terms for ancient times.

That's a pretty cool army structure you got there Hoffman. I use about three or four full legions for my armies depending on who the enemy is. But I just started to use skirmish forces and ambush forces to protect my borders and kill rebels, consisting of around 250 horses, 500 velites and, 350 slingers,(4.6 unit sizes) and I'm finding them very effective; just last night I killed 1900 heavy gallic infantry!
