    Default Gaming Monitor

I'm trying to find a good monitor for my new rig, which i just ordered, for around $200-$250 but I'm pretty noob when it comes to looking at monitor specs. Atm I'm looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824236049, which is 24" and 2ms. Other than the response time I dont really understand how some monitors have a contrast ratio of 10,000,000:1 and others, like what I'm looking at, only have 20,000:1.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Make sure that resolution can be handled by your graphics card.

Dont get a monitor with speakers. They are always crap. Save the money that would be spent on speakers you'd never use and put it towards a truly better monitor.

Good points from ROFL Copter and Ishan.

I think this monitor is a bit overpriced. You are paying for built-in speakers which are useless. Another factor is your system and gfx card...the larger the monitor, the higher the native res but also the greater tax on your gpu. Bigger is not always better, unless you have a great gpu. For a 24" widescreen monitor, the native will be something like 1920x1080, and to run your game at that res you'll want a good gpu. If your gpu is dated, I'll be looking at a bit smaller monitor for quality.

I prefer LED to LCD for gaming, but that is not a rule mainly personal preference.

Those contrast ratios are largely over-rated as an indicator of performance. I think brand-name and response time is more important. I am not a fan of ASUS lower-end monitors. I prefer Samsung...I think you get better value for money with a Samsung than ASUS.

    good luck

I actually ordered that same Monitor on Black Friday last year for $180. I absolutely love it. The color/calibration settings will need to be tweaked because the ones that come with it are a bit washed out, but it's a slight hassle compared to what it gives you. This monitor is definitely a good bang for your buck - if your gpu can handle it, of course (I have an overclocked 8800GT 512MB, but plan on upgrading within 6 months). I searched quite a bit around too, and for the size and price this monitor offers, I wouldn't hesitate buying it again. Asus, in my experience, makes quality monitors.

Who uses Monitor speakers anyways? Just consider them a decent back-back up if your other speakers/headset goes on you. (sorry misread other posts, yes they are kind of pointless but I still say the price-quality ratio is still one of the best). Nvm See below

Like to point out that if you have a PS3 or 360 the speakers would actually be quite useful when connecting via HDMI. For awhile I had my 360 hooked up with the HDMI and my PC with a DVI-D cable (which is all you need for the best quality viewing PC monitor-wise), and while I played the 360 I could have music coming from my PC speakers (which I spent a good amount on). This monitor makes it quite easy to switch from VGA, DVI, or HDMI modes of display in an instant. Depends on your TV situation and whatever interests I suppose.

That screen of yours has some terrible quality issues reported by many users (screen flashing on and off) and those who RMA are finding ASUS is not living up to their warranty. They said they would cross ship a defective display and they aren't, they said you would get a replacement and you don't (instead they ship yours back), after they don't fix it the first time and send it back to you they tell you "tough luck" and that's it.

Great monitor if yours never has the problem, otherwise it's a complete waste of $350 without warranty support.

Hopefully I didnt pick a totally terrible monitor...http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824001378

It had decent reviews and I've never had trouble with samsung before.

This is the monitor I'm currently using. Got a good deal on it, but you could probably go higher quality.

Sorry! The one you suggested was actually my other choice.

@ Nanny- So far it works great. The stock contrast was slightly bright for my taste but otherwise the picture is really good. Hd resolution is surprisingly better than the 1650x1050 i was running before. Now while playing Bad Company 2 I can actually see the rpg's about to smash into my face.

Atm i'm running with a gtx580 and i5 2500k so everythings pretty amazing.
