One way to get mods to play properly on steam is to just rename the entire mod folder to one of the 4 official mods ("americas" "teutonic" etc) and then from the launcher just choose whichever one you renamed it as. It has to be exactly the same folder name as whichever campaign you're replacing.

For instance, I renamed the real "americas" folder to "real_americas" and then renamed my TATW folder to "americas".

i've done this, i've also added registries so that TA is it's own mod but when it gets to the loading screen it just goes black for a second and then exits to desktop with no popup box or anything.

Click on the tools link in my sig and grab the Kingdoms Launcher Editing app, run it and create a setting for TATW.

If you want to play, don't use Steam. I don't use it and then never had problems with Steam, nor with my boxed Med2TW&Kdoms.

Dude that's stupid, Steam is simple for me to buy... I just buy it at home and download that takes 2 hours.

Your saying to go buy a new game at the store that I already have.

I had problems with steam to dude, you gotta do what the Steam tutorial says, here I'll link it.

In the m2tw folder you should see 3 exes. "m2.exe", "kingdoms.exe" and "launcher.exe"
Create a folder called "backup" and place the "launcher.exe" in that
    Rename the "kingdoms.exe" to "launcher.exe"
Now go to the mod that you installed(I'll use SS in this case) and find the ".bat" file(icon should be a gear thingy) and open that.
Copy this bit(the last bit will be different to TATW but should be similiar)
    @mods\Stainless_Steel_6\Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg
Now go to your "Steam Games" list and right click kingdoms, select "properties" and then "set launch options"
In the box that appears paste the bit you copied(in SS case it will be @mods\Stainless_Steel_6\Stainless_Steel_Kingdoms.cfg)
Now save that and go back to your games list, click on kingdoms then launch, it should bypass the launcher and take you straight to the mod.

Did you select the correct exe? That error is usually the result of choosing the wrong exe for a mod. The other possibility is there's a space in the mod folder name. So for example if the folder was called: mods/test folder it would cause the launcher to crash, notice the space between test and folder in the bold) I don't think this should be a problem for TATW but I don't know the default mod folder name.

It works without a problem for me (Win 7 x64). Are you sure that you installed the mod into the right place? The default location of the mods installation is not to the steam folder. I had to move the Third_Age folder from where I originally installed it to the C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\medieval ii total war\mods folder, where steam has all the mod folders. Once I did that and setup the settings everything worked like a charm.

I don't know why your launcher wasn't/isn't working for me.
I reinstalled Third Age and tried using your launcher. It still came up with the exact same error. But it turns out after a reinstall a rename to crusades sufficed while your launcher wasn't working? =\
