Hey anyone know how to get rid of skirmishing that takes so much ****ing time of a battle and are just boring?
I mean aint it a way to just skip this **** without taking out missile entirely?, anyone?

I'm serious. Charge. There's no reason why you have to hang back until the missile troops are done expending their ammo.

use some light cav to tie them downn and the move the spear infantry in for the kill this works most times , but some times the HA's will keep runing and you light cavlary will have to chase them for a while as the romans I use lots of the Fordreatare cavlary (sp?) and legions

You've got to be kidding!!!!!!!!! There is hardly any skirmishing in RTW/BI as it is. The appropriate question would be, "How do you get the AI to actually skirmish?" Real combat of the time involved a lot of skirmishing...else there would have been no use for javelins and bowmen and foot archers.

Want to avoid skirmishing? Just put your ranged units in front of your spears, wait for the AI to charge them. It seems to wave a red flag at the AI. The AI is brain dead about skirmishing.

If I wanted a simple CHAAAAARRRRRRGGGGEEE style of combat I would have picked up any old RTS.

i'd like to see the AI skirmish properly. the only way to get a good skirmish going is to initiate it yourself.

it seems you dont have problems with skirmishing, you have problems with horse archers. thats the way they fight. its a technique called the 'parthian shot' named as such, because the romans found it very difficult to engage the parthians in battle. the parthians simply approached the romans, fired their arrows, and as the romans attacked, the parthians retreated, firing more arrows as they went. it was also the prefered method of fighting for alans, huns, and even arabs sometimes.

before you complain about how the game works, go read the story of julian the apostate - one of the great general emperors, he died fighting the persians - he marched as far as their capital, but was unable to draw them into significant battle, so his territorial conquests were worthless. they simply shadowed his army, and attacked it from a distance - rarely giving his superior heavy cavalry and infantry the chance to engage. he died in one such insignificant engagement, when he was hit with an arrow while rushing to the scene of combat after forgetting to put his armour on.

either way, the best way in the game to deal with horse archers, i do it 2 different ways, depending on the makeup of my army.

the first is to form up 2 cohorts of foot archers into squares rather than lines, place one immediately behind your front line troops on each flank. the horse archers will advance to your flank almost every time. the foot archers outrange horse archers, they also outnumber horse archers. they will pick them off quickly and easily at a ratio of up to 3 or 4 or more to one. virtually any army that takes on your roman infantry will loose, so its just a case of keeping the horse archers back while your infantry do their job.

the other way is to use horse archers yourself. send your horse archers to attack the enemy horse archers with their swords. the enemy horse archers will retreat from them. in the chase that follows, your horse archers will fire into the backs of the enemy archers - killing many, and eventually will corner them against the edge of the battle area - and charge them down. a benifit of this, is that once your horse archers finish the job, they will usually be well behind the enemy front line giving you ample opportunity to use them to charge into the enemy rear, or to fire arrows into the undefended backs of their infantry. either will be decisive in most battles.

Habelo, the only one sounding "stupid" here is you. Actually, your tone and punctuation sound like a 9 year old that needs to go to the bathroom really badly. You said nothing about MP, just skirmishing. So you can't figure out how to handle it or find it boring? Go play another game, or don't play MP.

If you think the AI is "fine", then your observational skills are in serious doubt.

But if you really want to avoid it in MP, arrange games with units that can't skirmish. You are going to have to find someone with the same tastes as yourself or at least willing to take non-HA factions. Good luck with that, and next time you post, try actually explaining in sufficient detail so that others will know what you are actually talking about.

And antea is right, your problem is not with skirmishing, it is with horse archers. Next time choose an appropriate topic title and spare us the drama of trying to figure out that *your* problem is limited to MP, and that it is not really about skirmishing, but horse archers. :laughing:

And well i did say skirmishing in general right?
My point was that i wanted to erase all the skirmishing that takes time in the begining with a new tactic, wich im gonna try with charging and putting the time limit on 15 mins someone attack/defend, think its gonna work and make the game much more, fun and fast. That will solve all the horse archers/heavy-cavarly army retreating when attack(they wont have time with it).

I made the time limit 15 mins and someone attacked and defended. I thought it was fun and the others agreed with it. And it saved alot of time, all the skirmishing that happend was mayby 3 mins long. Anyway you guys should try it=)
