My first encounter with the Gauls was, impressive. They had a large army, about 2000, mostly swordsmen with a few variations including spearmen, skirmishers, and one unit of cavalry.
The battle erupted unexpectedly. I was come to think that they would hold back on thier attack until they had reinforced and brought their armies to the front lines, but they had moved early, earlier than me, which gave them the advantage.
It was 265 B.C. and I had held on to Bononia for around a year, small Gallic forces encountered and were crushed, my general gaining command points and more units as he trudged along fighting his way through small Gallic armies.
He had come to believe the time to take the next province was now, which was determined dude to the fact the Gallic Tribes were sending larger armies to face him, and although he liked slaying the monstroseties called barbarians in his lands, he knew that in order to stop suffering casualties, he would be forced to take more land.
His army was on the march, when all of a sudden, he felt a cold chill down his back, and saw them and ordered his army to form in maniple formation and await the on-comming barbarians, the battle was about to unfold and the fate of the Julii rested in his hands.
As they advanced, they sent their archers to the front to weaken the defences for the main force, but they were chopped down as the Roman Equites charged into their backs, for they were hiding in the woods.
The result, they routed and were taken off the field, but the equites were vulerable to skirmish attacks, so the Roman legion lobbed it's heavy mass down to the center of the battlefield, which was a slight hill that over-saw the valley.
As they marched, the hastati got into a tight formation and attacked the first wave of swordsmen, and although not the ones they called 'chosen', they gave a hard fight none-the-less, and put slight casualties on the hastati, who were forced to hold ground as the swordsmen limped off the battlefield.
The second wave was a bit more hostile, expierienced spearmen took the fight to the Romans.
The two middle hastati units formed a two-rank shield wall to with-stand the oncomming barbarians.
The spearmen drove their way into the hastati, and the princpes were called in due to 20+ casualties inflicted upon the hastati(yes, i am like that). The princeps were able to rout a few, but they returned with cavalry support and skirmish support, and the Roman patricians were called to duty as they rode their horses around the sides of the battle field and slew all the skirmishers, even those who ran.
They reformed, and smashed the back of the enemy with triarii support and were closing in on the enemy and soon formed a circle of blood and death.
Although barbaric, they showed signs of bravery and fought to the last man, and soon, all were anihilated. The result, 50-70 Gauls remaind, and around 50-70 Romans, particians and plebians alike, were killed on the battle field.
A few months had passed and the seige of Patavium was about to take place.
My first entry,, so how was it? Any help is appreciated.
