Welcome fellow Dutchman! As much as I would like, I won't reply in Dutch since this is an English forum..

You can make allies by engaging in diplomatic negotiations and offer an Alliance, simple as that. In order to do this, though, you will need either a diplomat or a princess and send him/her to any settlement, army or diplomat of the faction you want to negotiate with. Just right click on the target and the diplomacy screen will open.

It's easiest to get allies early on when the diplomatic field is still neutral. Try to pick factions that aren't in the way of your own expansion and if possible can help you fight some of your enemies. As England for instance, you could try an alliance with Spain or Milan..

Edit: In the vanilla game (without expansions) you can't order your own reinforcements if you are allready commanding a full stack of troops. You can only command 20 units maximum at a given time. So you can either have your reinforcements be commanded by the computer or use them as replacements for heavily damaged or completely annihilated units. For instance, one of your units is down to only 10 or 20 men, you can just withdraw them (click the white flag when that unit is selected). When they have left the battlefield the first unit of the reinforcement army may enter the battlefield and you will gain command over it.

1: You make alliances early in the game, by sending out diplomats/princesses to every faction and asking for it.
Why early? Because in the beginning everyone will happily accept alliances, and later you have get it through buying it with large sums of money or by making them your vassals (or by keeping your reputation super-high, which is difficult)

2: You can only attack with allies if they have an army close enough to the enemy. Then they will get drawn into the battle automatically. When the opportunity arises, it´s a great way to draw your allies into the same wars as you.

You send the princess like you would a diplomat.
There are two differences between diplomats and princessess, though.
    1. You can´t recruit a princess. They appear like other Family Members, and grow into the proper age in time. You have to check the family tree or the agents list.

    2. A princess can be used to further strengthen the bonds between you and another faction by marrying the Faction Heir or Faction Leader (if they´re unmarried). You don´t need an alliance to marry them in, but it is usually preferable.
You can also use the princess´ stunning charm to "persuade" an unmarried family member of another faction into abandoning his people and joining your family tree - A good way to deprive the enemy of their good generals (OBS! She might fall in love with the guy, and abandon your people for his!).

The same way as a diplomat, with that difference that your princess will have more diplomatic options (marry to faction heir etc.).

Anyway, get trade rights with everybody and don't piss off the Pope, that should get you a long way.

Use princesses just like diplomats. If the country you want to ally with has an unmarried heir/King, there will be a button in the diplomacy options that you can offer to them. If you are negotaiting with another faction's princess and you have unmarried heir/King, the option will appear for you to marry the other country's princess to your side.

When you have a diplomat, He is just like any other character and has traits. So the diplomats you get in the early game - they will have very low skill, unless you get them more skill - by sending them to do things and they are successful.
What you should do is gift people gifts of money, on the left hand side you will see "make single payment" - then pick the amount of money, then on the bottom it will say "offer item as a gift" -- so give factions you want to ally with a gift of money. Then try to ally with them.

DO NOT give anyone map informaton, or trade rights when they ask for it , if they are your immediate neighbours. I noticed every time in this game, a faction will come up as for "trade rights" and then the next turn one of your cities will be under siege.

For your own reinforcements, you have to make sure they are close enough to your main army. If it is a city, you need to get them right up along one of the walls outside.

Just make sure the box isn't checked for "Ai to be controlled by computer" before the battle.

I never was able to get an ally to help me fight in battles with a mutual enemy... shucks.

It happens in my games sometimes, but pretty much when there is a Crusade or Jihad, and then your allies have sent their own army of holy-warriors, lay siege to the enemy's city and wait for them to try and send a field army to help defend the city, then annihilate their regional standing army with the help of your allies.

It basically only happens 'by chance' when there isn't a jihad/crusade, and you have your army sitting right next to your allies forces and are attacked -- most likely to happen in Northern Italy / Alps.

The chance of getting allied assistance for a battle is unfortunately very slim. I had only three in my career, one on the field (when the allied Papal States army was returning from a rebelled Jerusalem and got blocked by the Turks at a mountain pass), one at Leon (when the allied Portuguese were loitering next to it for many turns and then I laid siege with an undersized army, using the Portuguese army as cannon fodder), and one at Tunis (when the allied Papal States laid siege to it, I rushed in and initiated the siege battle and claimed Tunis for myself).

I've done this a few times. I then just sit back, and let them take the city, and then the settlement falls under my command.

Kinda makes you think that Alliances in Med 2 are kinda useless if assistance in battles only happens by chance.

There is a reason they covered up all this by giving the name Total War.

I've actually never had that happen before untill I started my current campaign with Milan. Encouraged by the diplomacy thread I invested heavily in diplomatic relations and really kept close track of my allies situation. I've actually helped my allies quite regularly in their battles and visa versa. If you have really good alliances going, as I have in this campaign, and you ask for assistance against your mutual enemies time after time, your chances of meeting your allies in battle goes up considerably. I've had help from England fighting france, from Hungary fighting Venice and Byzantium and have helped Spain fight Portugal.

It's definitely my most interesting campaign so far..
