Actually, I've never seen anyone treat a returning vet badly. Maybe it's just the culture down here. Anyway, there is the GI Bill.

It's not really a question of their fellow citizens treating them badly so much as their benifits (and the access they hav e to them) being slowly eroded away while military spending itself goes through the roof--mainly on R&D projects for weapon systems the government has no intention of buying in the end. The Comanche helicopter, the Raptor, and that thing that was suposed to replace the Paladin all come to mind.
And, while it still exists for the time being, the GI Bill ain't what it used to be...
The bonus army comes to mind.
Yes. The Gurkhas in particular. Much of Asia and the Pacific in fact, modern or not, still hold to the values. We're talking people who resisted European colonisation with bow and arrow, sword, and lance. It takes an exceptional amount of courage to stand fast in the face of enemies when you have the advantage, to tell oneself that you're not outmatched when you have a nearly non-existent chance of winning takes a special kind of person. You're either born to it or a crazy extremist.
