Default Question about fixing data files

I'm pretty new to the forums and modifying M2TW data files, and I know it's somewhat different from RTW because the pack files are read by default rather than the .txt files. So I just wanted to make sure that something I want to do will actually take effect in-game.

I recently downloaded this mod and started a new campaign, and I was having a very hard time keeping my reputation up. I then went and checked the descr_faction_standing file in the SS folder and noticed a diplomacy bug that originally existed in M2TW. You lose more reputation from occupying a settlement than you do from sacking it. The relevant lines are:

    Trigger 0101_sack_settlement_decrease_global
    WhenToTest SackSettlement

    FactionStanding global -0.01
    FactionStanding target_faction normalise -1.0 40
    FactionStanding target_allies normalise -1.0 80
    ; FactionStanding target_enemies normalise 1.0 80

    ;------------------------------------------
    Trigger 0102_extermination_decrease_global
    WhenToTest ExterminatePopulation

    FactionStanding global -0.04
    FactionStanding target_faction normalise -1.0 20
    FactionStanding target_allies normalise -1.0 40
    ; FactionStanding target_enemies normalise 1.0 40

    ;------------------------------------------
    Trigger 0103_occupy_settlement_increase_global
    WhenToTest OccupySettlement

    FactionStanding global 0.05
    FactionStanding target_faction normalise 1.0 20
    FactionStanding target_allies normalise 1.0 40
    ; FactionStanding target_enemies normalise -1.0 40

    ;------------------------------------------
    ;Trigger 0102_city_razed_decrease_global
    ; WhenToTest CitySacked

    FactionStanding global -0.05
    FactionStanding target_faction normalise -1.0 10
    FactionStanding target_allies normalise -1.0 20
    ; FactionStanding target_enemies normalise 1.0 20
As you can see, in the bottom section because the top two lines are commented out, the negative reputation standing also ends up being applied to the occupy settlement trigger. Or at least that's what I think. Anyway, my question is if I go into the SS/data folder and modify the faction standing file to comment out that entire last section, will it actually take effect in game? Also, will it screw up my current campaign?

Some files can't be changed without starting a new campaign, but the ai file is ok.
