    Default Working on Mac... mostly...

Just to start off, I know this isn't a good place to ask about macs, but I couldn't find anywhere else for this game. To make a long story short, I'm running medieval 2 tw through steam(pc), which is running through crossover games which is running through my mac. It works like a charm, except I had to rename the "medieval2.exe" to "Launcher.exe" to get M2TW to work, and the "Launcher.exe" to some other name that was, well, not launcher to get the game to run. Unfortunaltey, Kingdoms does not launch when I click "Play Now" on Steam; the original M2TW does. This was described in the Crossover Forums. I do get an error message when i try to launch either of them without messing with any of the launcher names as mentioned before. I'll post the error message the next time i try the launcher, but I don't think I can solve this problem.

Now for the real question. I know that you can't run .bat files on a mac, and I checked some other places and no one seems to have an answer for this. I would like to run the unpacker (.bat file), but I can't figure out how to. I did find out that other people on the crossover forums managed to run .bat files for patches for other games they had, but they didn't really say how. They also had programs I could download to do it, but none of them worked (Boxer for example). Since Kingdoms is not working, and all the major .exe mods I like need Kingdoms, I was just going to download Agart's strat map cities and castles and Mapmod 1.7- that is, if I can get the unpack_all.bat to run. This is where I need some help/advice. ANYTHING appreciated!!! THANK YOU

Good you got it at least half running. This is where Bootcamp works.

I know nothing about Macs and less about thir programming. Since some have figured out how to run .bat files, they would be the ones to ask.

IIRC, Agart's files are .exe and you should be good.

For the unpack_all.bat, go to www.python.org, and have a llok around. It is written in Python for Windows and you have to learn Python to get it to work.

Okay, thanks. It least I can now play my favorite total war game of all time. but those ugly vanilla strat map castles...

EDIT: I downloaded Agart's stuff and it comes in a zip files, and it says I have to add on the --io_true first or something, which means I still have to unpack. I couldn't install them even when I did have a pc. I had a look at the python, and WOW does that look like its going to be fun to learn!

    A whole new world.

Seeif 7zip or Winrar have a mac version for the zip files.

the zip files work, i just can't install the files inside if I can't unpack. I've installed new strat map models for RTW for mac and they work fine, so these should work fine too.

Aren't there some small programs that convert BAT to EXE? Will that help with this issue?

Edit: just downloaded this one and created an exe from a normal bat file (mod's bat file) - works fine, easy to understand.

thanks Gigantus, will try it out.

EDIT: Just tried it, and it installs fine in crossover, but it can't find the steam files folder in the program files section which should be there. I can just move the unpacker to my desktop and convert it, then put it back into the medieval 2 folder.

You can actually right click BAT files and then work on them with the program (Compile with QuickBFC).

I'm not sure if you have solved all of your problems, but if I may make a suggestion, I think bootcamp with an actual windows OS installed is a better alternative to the windows emulators (crossover, parallels) when it comes to gaming on a mac.

If you are actually using a windows OS instead of an emulator, you will be able to open .bat files easily.

Yes, this method involves actually buying Windows XP, Vista, or 7, which is expensive, but the performance is better and the hassle is less. I can tell you for a fact that Kingdoms and various Kingdoms mods work fine on a mac with bootcamp and windows xp, because that's what I currently play them on. Just keep in mind that you should only get Vista or 7 if you have 4 or more gigs of RAM. If you have under 4 gigs of RAM, you're going to want to stick with XP for better performance.

This has been discussed in another thread. It's a family thing and out of his hands.

Don't worry about it, when I get to college I'll probably get a gaming pc to accompany my mac, but for now i have to be somewhat discreet
