    Default Stone wall or not?

I want upgrade my capital (London) but I most build a stonewall to do that. In the strategy guide I reed something like this. "Dont build stonewalls. Its bad for all in your kingdom". Why is it so bad to build stonewalls and shall I not upgrade my citys? Like a Moment 22

It would help to read the guide in the context it was meant. It does not say, "Dont build stonewalls. Its bad for all in your kingdom" in any way, shape, or form. What it does advise is to only build Stone Walls when you have the economy to support the increased costs. The Settlement Upkeep script deducts a set amount of gold from your treasury each turn to reflect the maintenance and government costs of having large towns and castles. So, build stone walls, but don't be suprised if your treasury is smaller due to the increased expense of having those big stone walls.

Now, if you didn't activte the Settlement Costs script at the beginning of your campaign, don't worry about it. Hope your DLV experience is enjoyable nonetheless.

You're most welcome, and glad to hear you're enjoying the game as much as the rest of us.

Not sure about the costs, but I'm pretty it pops up when you click on the finances button, along with all the other screens on field costs, noble tax, inflation, etc. There's a list nea rthe top, I think. If not, it might be somewhere else in the Guide. And I'm equally unsure about the Gov points, although I do remember reading that cities and fortresses cost 1 gov pt each turn. Might be large cities then.

I've been trying to figure out that line in the guide for a while now, actually. Here's what I've come up with:

Settlement cost for a Stone wall is 500 florins per turn. HOWEVER, a Large Wooden Wall is 200 per turn. So the upgrade is only a 300 florin increase. In Comparison, Large and Huge Walls are 1000 and 2000 per turn.

Stone Walls unlock all sorts of new trade buildings (paved roads, merchant wharves, etc) for most resources.

The government point penalties are for Large or Huge Walls (Large City or Metropolis). Minor Cities are free by points.

The scripting for the game (not the settlement costs, the Vanilla game engine under it) may or may not have upkeep costs for buildings underneath of this. However, I'm fairly sure that they aren't very large if they do exist, as I keep close tabs on where my money is spent (it is ridiculous how hard it is to keep a treasury over the 30k mark as the Byzantines-- or maybe that's just because I employ too many soldiers and have crap luck with the Random Event Generator).

My conclusion is that for most cities (especially coastal cities, but also true for any with multiple city neighbors or high-value resources), the Stone Wall is WELL worth the investment, simply because of the options it unlocks for the settlement. Going past that, however, is only advisable, for cities with VERY high income (ex: Venice, Constantinople).

And sorry for making my second post a mile long.
