Icon6 Help me pick a faction.

    Hello Everyone,

I've been playing Roma Surrectum II and have decided to give Stainless Steel a try for Kingdoms because it looks awsome. I'm at work right now and trying to decide what faction I will dive into tonight. I will probably start at medium until I get the hang of this. Anyway, I played the Scots, because I have scottish heritage and found them difficult plus looking at their unit roster, they don't seem to have a lot to offer in the later game.

Anyway I just wanted people's opinions on what Catholic army I should try other then the Scots to have a fun game. I was thinking the Teutonic Order, HRE, or the Crusader states. Oh, and I kept playing the spanish in vanilla Medieval, so I'm going to stay away from those. I just wanted people's opinions on what memorable fun campaigns they had and why I should try those.

    Thanks

HRE is always an interesting game given their position. and you have lots of different options so who knows what might happen! (very exciting). And they have lots to offer in the later game as well. Crusaders is also a good one. though quite a challenge. Im a Byzies man myself, but that might be just an addiction. definitely an interesting faction to play but they dont have much to offer in the late game.

Hey Johnny, sounds like your looking for something like me, I can't do Eastern factions myself, don't know why, just never could get into them everytime I've tried.

And in reply to tomato, I remember one of my college history classes, that because of the German (in this case HRE), position between superpowers on a continent, there will likely be continuous war because of strategic reasons (barring nuclear weapons). Doesn't sound like a bad idea. Hmmm I'm leaning HRE or Crusader States tonight. Anyone else have any suggestions?

If you want to play as the Crusader states I recommend you play Broken Crescent mod!! Because they are way more detailed in there.

Also if you liked Roma Surrectum II ... I suggest you play as the Byzantine Empire in the late campaign and try to restore the old roman empire!

Sicily is very easy to play, especially early game. They have early strong cavalry, usual western infantry, +strong italian militia. Easy expansion on south, and around main land. One more thing: east, west, south= all non catholic faction=can wage war without pope interference, which is great Good faction to learn few tricks...
Like desley said, crusaders are better in BC, but if you want to play on hard difficulty, try crusaders on late campaign, with gracul ai, it gives challenge
HRE on same conditions (late camp.+gracul ai) can be fun n tricky

hmmm....France, possibly? they have a very nice unit roster (esp later on) and a nice position. They can take England, fight the HRE, and fool around in italy, as you like. they can even get in on Iberia, if you so desire. they have a much more interesting roster than England, for example-more knights and cooler infantry. Cavalry is a huge thing in this game, given the massive power of the charge, and France (as a horse-loving country) will do very well out of this. Plus, it isn't too hard to get to Jerusalem for a crusade...

Well all factions can be fun lol, and yes, frace have great unit roster, tho I disagree on part vs england. Funds compare, quality of the units, upkeep, and availability, england have one of the strongest unit rosters in game, and certainly strongest in mid game. yeoman+armored swordsmen+billman+so on... But yes, frace really have pwning cavalry

Yea they are still in the running. Do they get really obselete in the later game? I notice they don't have much gun powder stuff, not a deal breaker for me, I still like the idea of elite knights, that's why I'm so attracted to CS and Teutonic Order.

I wouldn't say they get obsolete. Another good thing about the order is their start position. You're smack bang in the middle of pagans, orthodox and catholics. Makes for a much more interesting game than just being surrounded by other catholics like some factions are.

Hmmm, I can't play as the English, I think it's the whole being part Scottish or something. Totally Irrational I know. Hmmm either Crusader States in early campaign or HRE in the late campaign.

I like HRE because you have a lot of choice about where to expand and you have decent units all the way through, personally my favourite campaign was where i expanded quickly into italy taking everything but rome and then fighting east all the way to russia before fighting off the mongols

Not much to say, they have early Norman knights, usual western pool: mailed knights (miles), levy archers, weak infantry, tho strong italian militia, muslim archers, after crusades you can get templars or hospit., crossbow militia, etc etc... usual strong western cavalry, and lots of italian benefits (crossbow's, militia, ) *edit*
