Default Is there a more official way to discuss history here?

I'm not complaining that the thread regarding Carthage was closed.

I just wish to know if there is a better way to discuss the situation, since I actually felt like we were getting somewhere towards the end of that thread.

Perhaps a guide or a FAQ on how to bring up such topics and what is deemed historical evidence may help.

    Thanks!

LoneGunman: first of all, I'd like to commend you on your well thought out and reasoned posts. I closed the thread because it was just becoming a bitchfest. Feel free to start another, here or at the org. We can continue the debate, so long as it remains civil (not warning you, by any means, because you were civil the whole time).

The problem was that many people chose to act like children, and made the issue personal. I am not entirely without guilt here, because I was fairly angry on the first page (I think you can get a sense of that), but I was not unprovoked into that anger. I felt it would be better to just start a new thread, where the grown-ups can debate, and accusations, personal attacks, and over-smugness can stay away. Sound good to you?

Rather than lock entire threads, can't you just delete the troll posts?

Thanks for the kind response, I hope we can continue to remain cool, calm, and collected.

I must admit that the thread despite the odd lack of decorum was very interesting even more so because Peter Connoly was the author of the first book I owned(he was in the threads firing line).

Maybe I am over simplifying it, but on any given ancient historical point if there is some (even scant) evidence to suggest a given possibility of say a certain nations troops being armed in a certain way and the idea seems very plausible can't that theory be brought forth if there isn't any stronger counter evidence to deny even it's possibility?
