Default Where the series might go

The total war series is one of my favorite game series of all time, and I and all of us can probably predict where it will go in the future.

They have to stick where open field battles actually happen, I can play a billion other games that have small units and what not and its hard to call it a total war game at all if they do somthing like that.

They have pretty much run their course completely on time periods. Sure they could focus on certain parts and what not, but all thats left is to remake the things theyve already made. Only problem is they dont do enough with each new game and they quickly fall out of favor.

I doubt Total War: Shogun 2 (which is a total title change by the way) will be the last game, but they cant go more modern than empire otherwise whats the point in getting total war when other games have already done it better.

Get ready for alot of remakes in the future people, and im not concerned or worried at all because I know if they dont give enough inovation, people will stop buying.

Shogun 2 wont last long I already know it because they cut out mod tools, I still play and love to death Rome with Europa Barbarorum, so much that I kinda skip medieval even with some of its mods. Rome is we can all agree the peak of the series gameplay wise, and mod wise. Its still incredibly fun and popular to play and will be for a long time.

Now as the games become less mod friendly, they will slowly die I honestly believe. I really really liked Empire, its fun and if nothing else somthing new. But I honestly run it without any serious mods, all the mods do and can do is a couple reskins and tweaks to how guns fire basicly. We will never see a Third Age total war, or a beautiful creation like Europa, all those mods will ever be is Empire: Total War (slightly edited) Edition. Its fun but wont ever assend to the status of maintaing a constant install.

Shogun will be the same, it isnt new enough to grab my attention more than the brand name, and design wise its honestly made more decisions I didnt want than the things I did. We may be all blown away by the game, but I doubt it. The only thing destinguishing it is Japan, and the only reason Ill keep it in my collection is after watching a Japanese movie one feels the urge to command some samurai. Rome will always be around because of its amazing gameplay, watching a movie about the time period isnt required. That differance will pan out in the long run and I truely believe eventually CA will see it and take some serious time developing Rome 2 (Thats what its gunna be guys we all know it) to be somthing worthy of the first game

Luckily for us, there are a bundle of wars, conflicts, and battles for CA to exploit. Humans are violent

yea i've got to agree with the lasting appeal.
I reckon Medieval 2 was the peak. After that, a downward curve. But the games they produce are still high quality. I still look forward to new total war titles even though i might not be able to get them.

    1. I don't agree Rome was the most perfect, as I bloody love Medieval 2. I will agree they are both the peak, though.

    2. CA have said modding support will come through over time. There reasoning for this is highly debatable, perhaps controversial even, but nevertheless over time there will always be options to mod. I mean look what Darth_Vader (only mod I've had a chance to enjoy so far, I'm sure there are others) has managed to accomplish, his rendition of Empire is beautifully done. With that said, it would have been interesting if there were more tools, so I agree with that point.

Rome 2 is a given, and personally, I cannot wait. After that, who knows; personally I would like to go further back. There is something not quite as enticing about lining troops up and firing, or, god-forbid sitting in trenches taking well-timed potshots and walking attacks.

My opinion is that I think from what I have seen S2TW is a rebirth for the franchise. Return to the roots, go for the good old sword and shield fighting which they know they can do well, nail it. It will have an addictive role playing element where you will be able to get 'attached' to agents. The MP sounds worth investing time into, and other little bits sound a lot more advanced than ever before. But we will have to wait and see, I may be being optimistic, but I cannot wait

    I agree with RazorbackII.

Sword/Shield is much more fun then rifles so after ShogunII I expect Rome II hopefully followed by Medieval III.

    Mods I use:
    Europa Barbarorum.
    Stainless Steel.
    Third Age Total War.
    Darth Mod (S2TW)

I agree that Rome 2 will be next but I expect China I before Medieval III.

The thing about China is I think itd be too obscure to actually make them want to choose it for a location. When I, with my modest but in no means in depth understanding of chinese history think about it, not much comes to mind honestly. No instantly recognisable units, no instantly recognisable culturethat isnt terribly ahistorical. We're talking about a company that switched their lastest game's name to the grossly awkward to say Total War: Shogun 2 to increase brand name recognition. I think if they do deside to dive into China, theyd really focus on movie martial arts and the rediculousness of that buisness. I dont think anyone wants that

Possibly, but I wonder how many people could name the types of cohorts in the Republican Roman Army though before RTW. I think people would catch on rather quickly for a China game. It would still largely be Spear, Sword, Archer, and Cavalry with just some unfamiliar names. There is so much material to work with.

As RazorbackII said, its just not as fun for me to line troops up and firing, and even worse 'sitting in trenches taking well-timed potshots'.

Bows/arrows, spears, shields, swords and axes are so much more Total War in my eyes. Id like to see a Rome II after Shogun II, and after that Im not quite sure. But a Three Kingdoms TW would be cool, or maybe a TW game that takes place in the times of the peloponnesian wars. Playing as the ancient greek cities fighting for supremacy.

I also like the idea of Ancient Greece Total War, i believe this is a very interesting era, in time when Egypt was in decline their power rises, beside Greek polis states there would be many very interesting factions to play with like Phoenicia, Etruscans, colonial Greek states (from Black sea to Spain), Persia etc.

do you honestly think they will go straight to Rome 2??? consider this... the next game most likely will have a new engine implemented, and we all know when this happens... there are bound to be some problems. wouldnt you think CA would consider a new era to work these kinks out prior to the rerelease of the 'perfection' that so everyone claims as ROME???

also... im not convinced that they will go sequal back to back. think about what type of era would best be a test ground prior to the relase of Rome2??? hmmmmmm

#I don't think we will see a new engine. They have stated they are abandoning the revolution/evolution model and will be using the warscape engine for multible releases.
    But I agree I can't see 2 sequals in a row.

I don't think they will go for Rome 2 either.

Warscape was such an investment, to abandon it and make another new engine is just stupid.

Plus, Warscape allows sea battles and is more gunpowder oriented. Hand to hand combat is still very reliable and still looks impressive, though.

And the most urgent problem to fix I think it's the siege system, and they are aware of this.

Therefore: my guess is the next TW will be something that finds place between 1400-1700

They haven't ruled out 20th Century.

They will have to do a lot of work to make it viable for their style & format though.

They could use it to make naval battles from the Roman period?

Personally i think Rome was the best, by quite a way. That whole time period and the factions are really immersive, i played as the Romans, Greeks, Carthage etc. and loved each campaign. The factions in M2TW were too same-y.

I don't think they would ever go down the fantasy line, unless for some reason they got the rights for a big franchise, which i doubt. Would be "interesting" to see an official LotR total war though

    Personally, i'd hope for a Rome 2 or a 15th-17th century epic...

Also, I would love for them to re-make Empire (Don't judge me) but to actually get it right, this is my favourite period in history and when i heard they were making Empire, i was proper excited, i even didn't notice the bugs for like the first few months of playing it, i was THAT happy.

Maybe a really epic Total War that covers the end of the 15th to the end of the 17th, so they could really make use of the tech-tree and you could see the evolution of musketry.

But yeah, i reckon it's going to be Rome 2, because it's the one people made the most fuss about.

I hope for rome 2 but i smell fantasy, magic powerup buildings, heroes or characters to develop it seems like a step towards that. Either way i dont mind a Multiplayer cares mostly for gameplay and balance as radical as those seem to be. Shogun 2 was a surprise for everyone so anything is on the cards now.. many people were expecting or hoping for rome 2 last time round and it dident happen.
