Icon4 Can I system restore without actually using the system restore GUI?

Sorry for having multiple threads open at once, but I'm having some trouble. I downloaded some malware on accident, and it's causing really bad problems and bsods. I went to safe mode to run system restore, it couldn't find my restore points. I was pretty confused, now I think the malware deleted the points. So I googled, and found out where they are kept, in the hard to get to system volume information folder.

Now I'm staring right at them, and I've got twenty of them. Only problem, the system restore program doesnt recognize them. Is there a way to go back to these restore points without using the program?

Or maybe someone has another idea about what to do..? Ive tried a whole lot of things, and this is the closest I've gotten to getting it fixed.

    Thanks.
    Pwnt

Please, anyone? My computer is rendered completely useless at the moment, and I don't even have a Vista bootdisk, nor backups of my files..

I have never heard of this so don't think there is some external program that can use those points to restore your system.

I am sorry to say it but it's time for you to go buy a copy of Win 7 and start over. System Restore is part of Windows hardcode whether on the dvd or hardrive.

If the System Restore utility doesn't recognize them, they probably aren't going to work.

The whole reason why I'm doing this is because of the blue screens I'm getting. I really don't want to get 7 if I don't have to.. I have a blue screen screenshot and minidumps of that could help someone help me, I just usually fall back on system restore if something like this happens.

    I appreciate you guy's help

Upload the minidumps here in an attachment and maybe we can pinpoint a problem for BSOD.

Eh well you guys will have to wait until tomorrow for the minidumps, as I can't get to them tonight. However I can tell you what the blue screen said.

    STOP: 0x00000A (0xFFFFF9900C03F03E, 0x000000000000000C, 0x0000000000000001, 0xFFFFF80002ECAF5E)

I have no idea what this is. Hah. What can you guys do with this info?

That's just ram addresses. The info that follows on blue screen says what it is no matter how cryptic it looks. My experience, 9 times out of 10, it's a drver gone bad. I have also seen BIOS' die this way.

0x0000000A is IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. It's almost always a driver problem. Uninstall any drivers you don't need, and upgrade any that are left to their latest versions.

Only problem is, I don't know how to sweep out some drivers without triggering the blue screen..

Here's what I've got in terms of dumps, I also have three.dmp files from the past 3 blue screens but I don't know what to do with them..? Also, here is a .png of the blue screen itself.

Thanks again for your continued help, this is why I love the dudes in the basement

AH the XML that I have isn't loading up. Where can I find what you guys need to help me?

and I get that that little .txt file has nothing in it really..>.<

Hm there are 3 crashes one on 8 Jan and other two on 11th.
    They are caused by following:-
    • ntoskrnl.exe
    • win32k.sys
    • tdx.sys

It's clearly looks like a driver problem & tdx.sys file causes a BSOD due to a result of some driver/s or some antivirus apps that aren't fully compatible with Windows Vista.

Like Sim said "Uninstall any drivers you don't need, and upgrade any that are left to their latest versions."
    Edit:-
Lol i read your answer to sim's post below why can't you do that just run it in safe mode and uninstall them via computer management >device manager.

You delete them or uninstall them from Control panel>computer management>Device manager.

I have no idea which ones I can delete or need to keep...

I used driver sweeper to clear out all my leftover drivers... I only had ati, nvidia, creative and realtek audio. I dropped the nvidia, as I run ati now..

You can drop them all. If Windows starts again, you can reinstall them and if Windows does its job, it will be looking for the installation disc from you or installing what it has on file including its own generic drivers. Then you can install the good ones.

So now would be the time to ask my friends if they have a vista disk for me to borrow? Or will most of them work, including wireless network? That's my priority at the moment, I can deal without gaming for a while longer.

So you're saying under device manager, go through and right click uninstall every driver, including USB hubs etc?
