    Default Lost my Vista Disk

I lost my Vista Ultimate (64 bit) disk some time ago - I think I will need to reinstall Vista at some point in the near future so the lack of any disk is a major problem.

I wrote down the license key when I got the computer so I valid licence key to use if I downloaded Vista off Bit comet or something, but I would prefer to obtain a disk through legal means! Any ideas? Does Microsoft sell the disks cheap if you phone up with a valid license key and proof of purchase?

ug...Vista...no kidding it is worth it to get Windows 7 instead.

In my entire life, I have never had any satisfactory resolution whatsoever from a call to Microsoft. Truly, they could care less about your problem.

I'm not trying to make light of your problem mate , but the best advice I have is to use your valid-legal Vista key and use it towards the discount for your Windows 7 upgrade.

Find someone else who has a Vista disc and use your licence.

@ Nanny: There is no Windows 7 upgrade discount anymore.

There were upgrade discounts when it was released but my experience has been Full Version at any cost.

Agreed. Upgrades are a big hassle since you can't install it straight onto your HDD. Personally I'd fork out for a full version of Win 7 if I were you.

I have no intention of paying for windows 7, I only use windows for gaming and have Ubuntu for day to day use, upgrading makes no financial sense. My problem with borrowing a friends disk is 1) its Vista Ultimate and 2) its a 64 bit PC. Both are relatively unusual and as far as I don't know anyone who has that combination. All my family and friends have XP, Vista Home premium or windows 7.

    Any ideas?

Don't take my word for it, since I don't generally use Windows, but as far as I know, all the different editions are on the same disk. So Premium and Ultimate are the same disk, it just decides which one you get based on the license key you enter. 64-bit might be a different disk, but if you can borrow a 64-bit Vista disk of any sort from a friend, your key should work.

This is correct. Although another way of getting another disk is ordering one from microsoft. You can order a 64-bit OS disk from Microsoft's website by using your product key and they will send you out another disk for about $20-30.

Ask around and see if you can borrow someone's disc as downloading it even if its just the disc image is still illegal I'm afraid and it's stated in Microsoft's T&C's (it's normally even stated on the disc 'Do not make illegal copies of this disc') even if you have a legitimate licence key.

Unfortunately, if you want to play Windows games, your choices are limited.

Personally Win 7 is what Vista should have been and Win 8 whenever it gets here should be Win 7.
