Gold Edition crashes after the battle screen loads

Hi all - I've recently installed my Gold Edition version of Shogun to see if it runs okay on my new pc (using Windows 7). The first funny thing I noticed is that the menu screen flashes like mad and the colour to the background to the menu screen corrodes behind my cursor when I move the cursor around. At least it lets you through to the campaign screen without a problem but what is the underlying problem behind this?

That's only slightly annoying but the more serious issue is that there's a CTD each time just when the battle screen has loaded, before you can deploy your men. The harvest screen doesn't cause a problem and I can hear the voices in the Throne Room so I don't know if the Media Player Classic issue is part of the problem or not? The battle screen CTD sounds like more of a graphics issue to me. Any suggestions?
