    Default Internet Shutting Down

    Greetings,

I have looked high and low and I cannot find anything on this, so I thought the knowledgeable folks down here in the basement may be able to help me out. This is so damned frustrating, I am going to throw something out the window. Sorry, here we go: Every time that I turn my laptop on, my internet goes out on my PC and I can get no connection on the laptop. It is very strange and it just started doing this. I have done all of the troubleshooting techniques, but to no avail. In fact, I have to reset the modem and the router every time that I turn on the stinking laptop just to get the PC's internet working again. The PC is hardlined, so wireless is not an issue with that. The laptop shows that it has a strong wireless connection, but it has "limited access". When I disconnect from my network and try to reconnect, it tells me that it cannot. I have tried updating all the drivers. I just what the hell is going on and it is driving my crazy.

The PC is custom with Windows 7 64, and the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Windows 7 64.
I am sure that you all will probably need more info than that, so let me know and I will post what I have.

I hope that made some sort of sense.

Thank you in advance for any and all help in this matter.

Check the connection settings and put proper IPs etc in your PC and laptop as per your ISP.

Thanks for the responses . I will try that when I get home, Ishan. I thought that I'd checked all of that. You know what's weird? This just started happening like two weeks ago.

Yeah, I don't know what the problem is but holy @*&!, it is very frustrating. I don't know what it could be. I tried wiring the PC straight to the modem and that didn't work, until I called my provider and they reset the modem. I reset the router, put a new SSID and password on it and it still will not work. The old laptop recognizes and connects with no problem, but as soon as I fire up the Dell, all hell breaks lose. It is like the entire internet network that I have shuts down.

I am at my wits end with the laptop.

Obviously there are some network conflicts interfering with traffic. Get one machine up and running and internet working (either one) and get a DOS prompt open.

    Click Start > Run

    Enter cmd and press Enter

    In the DOS window type:

    ipconfig /all

    Press Enter

Boot your other machine, try to access the internet. If you cannot hit the internet then do the same thing on this machine.

Compare the results of both machines. They should have different IP addresses but the gateway and DNS settings should match. If they are being issued identical IP addresses then your router needs to be configured differently. If they are both being issued public IP addresses then you are running into a hard limit imposed by your ISP because your router is not acting as a DHCP server. The IP addresses need to start with either 192.xxx.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx

If they have different private IP addresses then we need to figure out exactly where the problem is occurring. Try pinging your gateway (router). Its probably 192.168.0.1 as that is the default on most home routers.

    In your DOS window:
    ping 192.168.0.1

    It should say something like:

    Reply from 192.168.0.1 time = 2ms

If that works then try getting outside of your network, ping google or twcenter.net or some other website. If the result is "Host name cannot be resolved" then there is a DNS issue. Try going to TWC directly by using our IP address:

    http://208.69.72.113

If that works then we can change your DNS settings either in your router or on both of your machines.
