One of the more painful things to watch the AI factions do is get excommunicated and have a mass of catholic factions tear them apart.
It would seem that the cease_hostilities papal mission that AI factions get doesn't always fire, if the LTGD log is to be believed, prior to excommunication.
In diplomacy there is the option to request recommunication - (or reconciliation as it appears in SS6.3) from the Pope - all you need is plenty of cash and a diplomat knocking on the pope' door and hey presto excommunication goes away and Pope is happy.
Yet I've never seen the AI try this.
The Pope can demand a gift as a mission, but from what I understand the AI factions won't get such missions.
One can test for FactionExcommunicated in a script but is there any way to get the AI to send a diplomat to the Pope (if necessary spawn one next to Rome) and pay enough money to get the AI faction reconciled?
In some games I've witnessed three factions get excommunicated within 30 turns. Rather spoils the game IMHO.
