Hose it for sure. If you're trying to change all the different building pictures and character icons and such. You have to rename each individual tga to the name you want it to replace so greek blacksmith would have to be called barbarian blacksmith, then you would get the image you wanted.
Thanks for saving me a headache PatWest, you have no doubt saved me much angst!
So I unpack the packs folder, make my adjustments, and then what? Do I remove the blue pak files from the origianl pack folder and replace them with my unpacked, new data folder? Thanks for any help!!
Threads merged. No need for seperate ones.

Sorry guys it isnt working for me. Let me go through what I am doing: I unpack packs, copy everything from the ui/greek folder and paste it into the ui/barbarian folder. I then rename everything that says greek to barbarian.
In the thread posted above it said to create text documents with the same names as the pak files and it would "trick" the game and it would look into the newly unpacked files. However, I am recieving error messages of this sort:
Error: Filename doens't exist
data/moders_building/kill_zone/wooden_wall_short_straight_destroyed_kill_zone_05.CAS
also: Script Error in data/descr_font_db.txt
couldn't find data/fonts/font_18.cuf
Sorry for my ineptness and if this was answered. Some of this seems to be going over my head. Please don't abandon me! Thanks for any help offered!!
What exactly are you trying to do. I can walk you through it providing I know ofcourse. If I don't know I'll admit it and try to direct you in the best direction. I thought you wanted to change the graphics for some buildings from barbarian to greek. I have never tried that but don't see any reason why it wouldn't work.Originally Posted by HopliteGlory
It sounds like you may be over doing it. I would have left the folders alone and just changed the individual buildings you wanted like changing unit cards. I have added buildings to factions that didn't have them and had no trouble.
In your case if you wanted a barracks to look different you would just have to find them in each folder, greek and barbarian, make a copy of the one you want to use in place of. Then copy the name only of the barbarian equivalent to that copy. Dump the one you don't want, the original barbarian barracks, and place the copy of the new greek barracks, renamed ofcourse, into the barbarian folder. I know this takes time but it's the only easy way I know.
Don't make too many changes at once untill you get the hang of it or even with show err on you'll have little way of knowing which of the many changes caused it.
Good Luck.
Basically, I'm trying to make the barbarian factions be greek. I want to change their culture from barbarian to greek. I don't want to add any units or anything, I just wanna transform the barbarian factions.
What I tried was copying everything in the packs/data/ui/greek folder into the packs/data/ui/barbarian folder, removing the original barbarian files and renaming everything newly pasted barbarian where greek was.
Hope this is not still confusing, thanks for your help.
That might be something thats not doable. At least it's a little beyond my area of expertise. If you want the barbarian buildings to look like the greek ones, what I was explaining will do that. You can also let them build some of the greek buidings themselves but not the entire tree because barbarian factions can't build beyond the 3rd level. To change or convert the entire culture from barbarian to greek but still be a barbarian faction may not be possible. At the very least it would require an enormous amount of work. Try a search here or at totalwar.org for changing cultures.Originally Posted by HopliteGlory
I could give provinces to the greeks or move them to northern europe and then only let them build barbarian units. That would be possible, alot of work but doable.
thrace are a mixture of greek/barbarian maybe if you start by copying their structure you'll get what your after
or from scratch check here

Isn't it possible? I thought this was accomplished with RTR in regards to the Egyptian faction changing into the Ptolemaic faction. The leader pics were changed, generals on the strat and battle map were greek, the buildings and cities were changed into greek in one of their earlier patches, but was changed in the later patches back to Egyptian.
However, first I must learn to implement any of my changes in packs folder.
Any ideas?
This is what I was looking for, Epistolary Richard knows what he's talking about. He's been very helpful to me in the past. The thread below says just what I suspected. You can give them most of the traits or you can use the thread Halie Satanus posted and create an entirely new culture. Again it's alot of work. It would be almost be easier to borrow and move one faction north that has a greek culture and rename it, than change everything within an existing faction to make it simulate a greek culture. You have to decide which is quicker and will best suit your needs.

Where are you at again with just the pak files? Start there and I'll try to see where you missed a step. Try just moving the unpacked UI folder to the main data folder and create the blank ui_1.pak and change the 1st level barracks to the greek version. Post back and tell me what happened.
Good Luck,
PatWest
P.S. Btw... I am working on a mod to release to the public based on earlier work that I'm porting to Webbirds map. I'll be around frequently for the next couple of weeks, at least, so I will be able to work this out with you.
