So that the game is a challenge, and it is very hard to fight a two front war. Expensive units just makes the game more realistic.

Tell me about it im Rome and fightinh both gallic tribes and the Carthaginians ( for the medit islands) and Epirotes after i kicked them out of south italy they marched norht along the coast towards italy fortunatly i spotted them doing so and quickly grabbed the rebel town that blocks the route into italy. How long can the crappy garrison of conscipts last?

I like the unit costs the way the are makes it nice and challenging and think although it can be a bugger been 10 Mn short of what i need to build a building its great fun .

remember that the recruitment speed has been doubled de facto because of the 4 season system (which is, btw., AWSOME). if you play on very hard you're going to have quite a challenge with economically weaker factions meanwhile the AI is capable of recruiting huge armies.

Rome is a bit too easy. Try a small faction like Koinon Hellenon or Pontos. I'm playing with the former, much more challenging than playing with the Romans.

it might have happened by chance, but i find it astonishing how parallel the game is developing to real history due to the victory conditions.

Getting the Casse in gear to power, wealth and glory is, also, no easie task. They have one city and crapload of rebel armies.
