    Default M2TW very laggy

    Hello all.

    Recently got a new computer (well, family got a new one). Since M2 decided to stop working on the last machine as a result of (I think) a mishap with the unpacker, I was keen to reinstall it on the new machine.

    So, installed the game with the kingdoms expansion pack, and there is extreme lag going on, both on the battle map and campaign map (but not on the menus). Even putting all graphics at their lowest is having no effect, even though the auto detect function in the in game settings suggests I should be at high for all of them.

    The lag is slightly decreased in battles when it's only 1 unit vs another. But this is really quite annoying. Running windows 7, but not being too much of a techie, am not really quite sure what specs people would want/ how to get them to help me resolve my problems.

    All advice is appreciated.

    Have you installed directx 9.0c manually?
    Have you installed .Net 4 manually?

    Then post your dxdiag.

    Just did some ferreting about the forums, looking for similar cases, and in one of them, someone seemed to be having a similar problem. I'm running Directx 11, when you suggested 9 to this other guy. Problem is that being a tech illiterate person, I'm fairly clueless about these things, and having to do it all on win7 is very annoying too.

    Dx11 does not contain all the .dlls the game requires and it's newer format than dx9 and its predecessors. Install dx9 and dx11 won't even know it's there. I did this when Vista and dx10 was released so I could play RTW and M2TW.

    I've tried installing dx9, but the computer just keeps telling me that since I have dx11, I don't need to install dx9, and so it does nothing with it...

    Disable the UAC, download it to desktop, then try it. I had to do it this way when Vista was released.

    Haven't had a chance to get on the game yet, doing some file transferring from old computer, which isn't working very quickly, and is using most of the processor, so don't want to overload it with M2TW. I'll get back to you when I've had a chance to do it.

    No hurry. Take your time.

    By download it to the desktop, you mean instead of running it, save it to desktop and run it from there? Cause it's still telling me that it detects Directx 11, and no further action needs to be taken. And I think that's the dxdiag attached if that'll help you in anyway.

    Did you disable the UAC first? Yes, I mean save to desktop. It and disabling the UAC is the only way to force it.

    Was looking through microsoft website to try and find the directx 9 download. Again, being very tech illiterate in such matters, I'm finding all these different sdk files and the like which is leading to much confusion on my part, cause all the dx9 things seem to be updates as opposed to the thing itself. A link to the thing I need would be much appreciated. Thanks for your patience.

    Reporting back.

    Dx9 appeared to install when UAC was disabled. Looking at the dxdiag though, apparently 11 still is in control. So I tried installing it again, and now it doesn't want to install. As soon as I accept the terms of use then select next to being installation, I get a message telling me that an error occurred, and that I should look in the DXError.log.

    [01/14/11 22:01:44] module: DXWSetup(Nov 19 2010), file: dxwsetup.cpp, line: 229, function: CDXWSetup::InitInstallEngine
    Sections are not initialized.
    --------------------
    [01/14/11 22:01:44] module: DXWSetup(Nov 19 2010), file: psheets.cpp, line: 699, function: PreinstDlgProc
    CDXWSetup::InitInstallEngine() failed.

    Is what is in said log. Have been searching for other ways to solve it, like running it through backwards compatibility, but the problem just seems to boil down to Dx11 being extremely stubborn.

    If it refuese to install the second time it's installed.

    Then, it's your graphics chip doing it to you. It really is not made for 3d gaming but take a chance. The only way to get rid of the lag would be a dedicated graphics card.
