    Default Where is my pope?!

Im playing an HRE campaign in 6.3 with the fixes installed.

In my campaign pretty much all of my neighbors decided to attack me, so naturally when I counter attacked I was ex-communicated.

Long story short I didnt like the pope telling me what to do, so I destroyed Rome.

Problem is, after I defeated all of his armys and killed the pope, he dissapeared.

It says there is another pope elected and I use FOW command to look for him but I cant find him. He has no other settlements.

Is there a console command to locate him?

I think if you're HRE and you take Rome you set up a puppet Pope who lives in Rome still so he doesnt have his own settlement any more. I think that's what happens. Might be wrong.

That is always a pain in the butt. Happened to me a few of times and mostly it wasn't me who conquered Rome. That's why I always keep track of a Papal States army and before wiping them out and give them a useless settlement out of danger and where I can keep track of them.

Antony: "Oh, the lictors guild, very good. Only rally the bakers and the flute players and you can put on a festival."

the pope if u take rome spawns in his home (whatever country he was a cardinal from) first...the next pope will spawn in roma region again. assuming they have no other territories.

    Holy Roman Emperror

See if you can track down one of his agents. Give him a hovel somewhere convinent, and some spending loot.
Use your money to truly make him an HRE puppet.

Also, if there is no more cardinal, when it's supposed to elect a pope, the papal place will stay vacant until there's a new cardinal. I did it once after I assassinated the Pope and rushing on him each times he spawned

I have the same problem. In my 6.0 campaign with the Teutonic Order, the Sicily took Rome, and now there is a new election every 1-2 turns, because the new pope allways dies for some reason... At first, I allways elected my own cardinals, but now I'm tired of loosing all my high tier priests and I elect the AIs cardinals. Doesn't matter if they hate me, after one turn they're gone.
What can I do about it? It's so bloody annoying! Maybe give the papal states a settlement? First, I need to know where they are...

Well, at least quite close to someone they're at war with, probably Sicily. Giving them a territory (out of harms way) would certainly work.

If the papal states has any fleet, you can find the pope on bord.
If not, search the woods near Rome with a spy. Could be a bad surprise to see the new pope with a powerful merc army .
Life is a joke, and one day you gonna laugh yourself to death about it.

Make Rome revolt either by sabotaging the buildings and infesting it with spies or by conquering it and cranking up the tax rate while keeping no garrison. When it finally rebels, the city will revert to the Pope.

Well for future Papal take overs: You'all be sure his Eminence has somewhere else that he can call home before you take over Rome.

That's for sure. Problem was in my case that the AI took Rome and I only found out after several turns, new popes and the loss of 4 cardinals what had actually happened.

I now found a inquisitor. However my diplomat can't offer him anything. I will follow him with a spy, maybe he will return to his new homeland, although I don't know why he should do that. I will also search the sea for papal navy...

Once I found him... Rhodos seems like the perfect place for my beloved puppet

You're right. They never ever return until their dead, at least from my experience

Never take rome, just seige / blockade and make it your vassal. Counts as your settlement and you get a little coin. Make sure you buy your way back into the church lest and enemy offer to crusade to Frankfurt... And the Puppet pope will just crank out stacks of worthless troops which will help if the muslims attack sicily or the byzzies for that matter.

It actually is working out pretty nicely for me.

I had a crusade called on Frankfurt but I was able to fight all of the crusading armies off with a full stack of feudal foot knights and mangonels. Then I would attack smaller crusader armies with half a stack of heavy cavalry and now there is only 1 stack left and they are about to die. Didnt think I would be able to hold on to it but it worked out somehow.

A tip with the HRE, build forts at all the river crossings. Slows down ai turn times but if attacked and your fort is on the right side of the river if can be devastating for superior forces attacking you.

I do this for every settlement where applicable. For instance build forts just south of the river by Hamburg. One to the left and one to the right half way to Madgeburg and another near Madgeburg. Never lost Hamburg or Madgeburg doing this. Most times Denmark attacks the fort west of hamburg and I can easily get the garrisons in the other forts there before they try to take the walls. then I wipe them out and head for Roskilde. I puppet Denmark so I leave them Arhus.

I already thought of this but instead of using forts I was just going to position small units at the bridges and river crossings around frankfurt.

The problem is I dont have the economy to have atleast 10 little armies sitting around not doing anything but spending my money. So I decided to just make a large all cavalry army that I could move around and counter the invading armies with.

Relating to the original title of the thread, I still havent been able to find my pope... sneaky bastard.

Think ill just wait for him to die and try to find the new one when he is elected.

Forts do have free upkeep slots - which saves money. Plus you can add more slots in the descr_strat before starting a campaign

    I think you type
    free_upkeep_forts # from 1-20

I dont keep armies in the field unless attacking. I normally just keep the free upkeep slots filled with whatever works and wait to build armies when attacked. The bigger your armies, the higher your rankings, the sooner you are attacked. Strength doesnt deter attacks it actually encourages it.

My popes die every to every second turn, so how do I find him when he is elected?
