Realistic/stronger archers for 6.3
Is there any such mod? I know there was for earlier versions of SS. Any mod compatible with 6.3 making archers more effective (and possibly less accurate at long ranges) would be awesome. Its pretty lame to watch a company of cavarly knights or swordsmen being hit, volley after volley with longbows or crossbows, losing only one or two man each time. I also wonder if the fire rate is too low, but I guess that is hard-coded.
Id also like to see more effect in other archers than the english ones. Loads of factions had longbows historically, including vikings. The english ones are just more famous.
This would make archers more powerful, but they were very strong historically, if well trained and placed. Archers could stop a cavalry charge, and often beat units more numerous than themselves. The english longbow armies that beat the french armies during the 100 years war were much smaller in size. in SS, even with perfect placement of troops, it is pretty hard to beat a same size army mainly with archers, and certainly beating a larger army. If you look at the stats for the battle of Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt, you can see that small numbers of archers could kill huge amount of men at arms and knights with minimal losses. (wikipedia)
And why are they not armor piercing any more? After all, it was largely the longbow that put an end to the dominance of cavalry on the battlefield. But in SS 6.3 arrows aimed at armored cavarly are wasted.
Even peasant archers should be pretty powerful. The medieval warbow armies were largely made of peasants/non professionals. The reason many countries (certainly France) did not use this awesome weapon much was exactly because they did entrust peasants with that much power.
If more realistic archers makes the game totally unbalanced then maybe they should be more expensive to recruit. They were certainly valued historically, and ransom for longbowmen was very high.
Archers had historically other advantages as well. Making ditches on the battlefield, or using rough terrain could increase their effectiveness even more. Obviously this can not be implemented in a mod, but archers should be much more powerful for historical accuracy and fun.

Maybe I'll cut the ensuing discussion short by linking... English Longbows w/ No Penetration?
There was a more detailed topic, someone will surely link it as well.
Regarding submods, check out AP ranged troops and rebalancing for SS6.3 (early era)
