"The sinews of war are not money, but good soldiers"
I like to think: "Money is the heart of war" as an extension to that quote.
But I like most of the Macchiavelli quotes as well. I don´t get why he has such a bad reputation (ever heard the expression "macchiavellistic"?), most of them makes perfect sense when you think a little.
(that´s all I could think of on a straight arm)

Machiavellistic? No, can't say I have Silverheart. Now... Machiavellian, on the other hand, I've heard often. Even had it applied to me a time or two.
He has a bad reputation because he's not well understood, similar to Giacomo Casanova. On the other hand, Machiavelli rejected the idea that morality should play any part in politics. That idea has never sat well with the masses.
My favourite bit of advice Machiavelli wrote was about getting people in a troublesome town to like you:
Step:
1. Send a trusted lackey to go rule the town with an iron fist, tell him to extort the peasants, rape the women, etc etc.
2. Wait for the townspeople to complain. When they do, say you'll do something about it.
3. Arrive at said town without warning your lackey, act appalled at what he has been doing.
4. Execute lackey on the spot.
5. Enjoy new reputation as a kind and just saviour.
Effective, yes. But it shouldn't be too hard to see where the bad reputation comes from...![]()

It still makes perfect sense nonetheless (IMO)... and if the "masses" are too stupid to see through a charade like that, who cares!?
Idiots shouldn´t be given any heed anyway, right?
ps.
Machiavellian is probably the same as machiavellistic (a little bit of Swenglish there)

" It is better to be on hand with 10 men, than to be away with 10 thousand" -- Timur (Tamerlame)
I like this quote the best because it applies the most to my games in that even if I can recruit top tier units in a well developed region, I'd rather use whatever I can muster on my frontier than march my elites half way around the map.
"It is easy to be brave behind a castle wall."
"Sheer numbers alone do not win battles" - or something along those lines
I speak French to men, Italian to woman, Spanish to God and German to my horse.
"Men sholud either be treated generously or destroyed, because they can take revenge for slight injuries-for heavy ones they cannot!"
The object of war is not to die for your country but to make another dick to die for his. George Patton 1885-1945, American General
If you wait here Saladin will come and kill you, but if you leave the dishonour will be much greater then you can handle- Some guy said to King Guy of Jerusalem.
I think that shows how immportent it was with personal honour in the middelages

John Milton and Niccolo Machiavelli have nice quotes.
Men are more ready to repay an injury than a benefit, because gratitude is a burden and revenge a pleasure ~ Tacitus
"If you´re lucky enough to be Irish, you´re lucky enough."
"Strong drink is the curse of the land. Not only does it make you shoot at your landlord, it causes you to miss him..."
Hehe... I just found that amusing...![]()

Very funny indeed, but I don't recall seeing the last two quotes. I guess I'm not lucky enough.![]()

Fun things to do in Total war:
- Trample peasants to death with elephants (optionally with culverins)
- Burn peasants with greek fire
- Bombard peasants with mangonels
- Burn peasants with fire-arrows
Yes, I like my peasants...
Fried!!!
" In times of peace, sons bury their fathers; In times of war, fathers bury their sons" is a good one but there are so other really good ones also.
"The art of war is of vital importance to the state. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected" - Sun Tzu
I like (something along the lines) "Do not inflict every casualty you can on an enemy because he may become your friend."
I also like "It is better to be feared than loved"
I often send spies on impossible missions just to load up the game again and see a quote on the loading page. No joke. Here are my favourites:
Men should either be treated generously or destroyed, because they take revenge for slight injures - for heavy ones they cannot.
The best fortress which a prince can possess is the affection of his people.
He who wishes to be obeyed must know how to command.
One should never risk one's whole fortune unless supported by one's entire forces.
Wars begin when you will, but they do not end when you please.

"In a fight, anger is as good as courage." - Irish proverb. Isn't that true? You see dozen Frenchmen raiding your village, you grab your axe and kill them - simple as that.
"In stone halls they burn their great fires,
in stone halls they forge their sharp spears.
Whilst I walk alone in the mountains,
with no true companion but tears.
They hunt me with dogs in the daylight,
they hunt me with torches by night."
I like the machiavelli ones. is there somewhere a list of all the quotes used in TW-games?
