Default Unspecified error on launch after 1.02

I just installed patch 1.02, and now I get an Unspecified Error message each time I try to launch M2TW (see screenshot). The dialogue/alert has an OK button. When this is clicked the program exits.

On the existing game, on the Menu\Options, the game was given as "1.0" in the top right hand corner of the screen.

I checked the M2TW patch thread, at:
    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=96588

I downloaded the patch from Gamespot. The file is called:
    miitw_update2_efigs_rc_final.exe

    I placed the file here:
    C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War

I then ran the exe, and on completion it asked if I wanted to restart. I accepted, and was restarted.

I searched for the 2 files to delete (as recommended on the patch thread), but could not locate them in the data folder, or within the SEGA folder. The 2 files are:
    - data\descr_geography_new.txt
    - data\descr_geography_new.db

I looked at the ReadMe in the folder, but it was the same as previously.

I then tried to run M2TW:
    - from the shortcut on the Start Menu
    - by opening the dvd drive(s) and closing them to launch the autorun
    - by clicking directly on the M2TW exe

First I received a notification that I must be connected to the internet. I connected.

Now, each time I try to launch the game I receive the the "Unspecified Error .. now exit" message.

I have 2 dvd drives - one internal, and one external. I have tried both.

I read the troubleshooting guides and what seemed relevant on this forum. I could not apply what I found to my siutation.

I have run DXDiag and saved all information as a .txt file.

    Can you help?

It sounds like a bad dowload, all 611mb worth. It took me tree tries to get a good copy.

miitw_update2_efigs_rc_final.exe is shown as 628,017 Kb in size.

Can I uninstall the 1.02 patch?

I will try downloading again - it takes 1 - 2 hours on my connection (a dongle from T-Mobile, with erratic download speed).

    You have the right one.

No, you have to totally reinstall it. CA/Sega snafu.

Mine takes 1.5 to 2 hours on my dsl connection when it works.

Thanks irishron, for coming back so quickly.

Ok, I've downloaded a new copy of the patch, and did as for the first time. I am still getting the Unspecified Error. The sequence was:
    - deleted the first copy of the patch
    - placed the new copy in the M2TW folder
    - right clicked, and selected Extract here
    - double clicked on the setup.exe
    - selected Yes when I got a message that said "The setup has detected that version 1.02.001 of Medieval II Total War is already installed ... do you want to install anyway?"
    - restarted as requested
    - Unspecified error on launch

The ReadMe is now for v1.2

I have uploaded a screenshot of my M2TW folder with this post.

I will download the patch a third time, and try again.

I have edited the time scale to be .5, i.e. 6 monthly turns. After reading through the forums on this I found a post where it said that any edit would cause the patch to fail, and a reinstall of the game was necessary. Is this correct?

I did have the original M2TW vanilla installed on my first laptop. I got a new laptop, and purchased the Kingdoms Gold Edition. This had 2 discs.

After installing, and using Disc 1 as launcher I would get a screen that showed just the option for M2TW. The expansions (Kingdoms, Americas etc) were greyed out. When I clicked on the M2TW option I would get an error message that said "Please insert the correct disc". I tried both Gold discs with the same message. Then I tried the original Game disc from M2TW, and that ran the game as V 1.0.

Sorry this is a bit of a muddle. I'm now downloading the patch for try #3. Thanks for your assistance.

CA/Sega snafu bites, again. Sorry if this is your first foray into installing Total War games.

Uninstall the game, delete all Sega folders, run a registry cleaner, reboot, reinstall the game, now try the patch.

I just thought I'd let you know what happened. I had the same problem after applying the patch the third time.

So, I backed up the saved games, uninstalled, and deleted the Sega folder. Didn't clean the Registry - figured I'd do that if I needed to.

Reinstalled Kingdoms Gold. Everything is sweet. I reset the turn times, unlocked all the factions, and replaced the saved games. All the expansions are available this time. The saved games all load - patched, to my delight.

    Thanks irishron for your assistance.
