    Default RTR - The Diadochi

This is a personal project of mine, but if there is interest, I may release it.

Rome Total Realism - The Diadochi

The start date will be some time between the death of Alexander and 301 BC.

It is based on RTR 6.0 with the Epirus Faction mod.

Faction line-up will include the stock RTR factions, with the following exceptions:

    - Senate removed.
    - Epirus has been converted to the Kingdom of Sikelia (Syracuse).
    - The Brutii have been converted into the Hellenic League.
    - Pontus has been converted to the Kingdom of Antigonos.
    - The Thracians obviously will be the Kingdom of Lysimachos.
    - Plan to convert the Scipii into the Etruscans or Samnites (leaning toward the Etruscans).

This mod started out as a Syracusan mod based on the reign of Agathokles, and has evolved into a Diadochi mod, as Agathokles elevated himself to the King of Sikelia in imitation of the Diadochi kingdoms.

I still have alot of work to do, but it seems promising.

I'd go with Samnites since all of Etruria had been conquered by Rome at that date (or at least im fairly sure, or was it just the southern Etruscans? )

either way, this sounds like a great mod. Will it be for RTR 6.0 gold or regular 6.0?

I chose regular RTR 6.0 with the Epirus Faction mod because the map already included the fifth province in Sicily (Panormos).

The Etruscans still appear in Etruria on the maps I am using, but the Samnites may be a better choice to avoid a power vacuum in Southern Italy.

You should keep in mind that 6.0 is a very unstable build and most people had dozens of crashs and freezes with it.

    I need some opinions...

The Kingdom of Parthia or the Satrapy of Atropatene, which do you prefer?

[EDIT] I just finished adding the Samnites, and it seems pretty crowded in Italy. The Rebels can probably do a well enough job there.

With this in mind I think I will convert the Scipii into the Satrapy of Atropatene.

    Tentative faction list:

    {ST_JULII} The Republic of Rome
    {ST_BRUTII} The Hellenic League
    {ST_SCIPII} The Satrapy of Atropatene
    {ST_MACEDON} Kingdom of Macedon
    {ST_EGYPT} Ptolemaic Empire
    {ST_SELEUCID} Seleucid Empire
    {ST_CARTHAGE} Republic of Carthage
    {ST_PARTHIA} Satrapy of Parthia
    {ST_PONTUS} Antigonid Kingdom
    {ST_GAULS} Gallic Tribes
    {ST_GERMANS} Germanic Tribes
    {ST_BRITONS} Illyrians
    {ST_ARMENIA} Satrapy of Armenia
    {ST_DACIA} Lysimachid Kingdom
    {ST_GREEK_CITIES} Kingdom of Sikelia
    {ST_NUMIDIA} Kingdom of Numidia
    {ST_SCYTHIA} Sarmatians
    {ST_SPAIN} Iberians
    {ST_THRACE} Satrapy of Bactria
    {ST_SLAVES} Independent Cities

The Phalanx, because battles don't need to be fun.

It seems to me that you have almost an identity crisis - on one hand its all about the Diadachoi but on the other you are adding in Iberia. I think we all have a natural habit of cramming in as many things as possible, but I am a firm believer of the "less is more" school of thought. If you are going to make a mod based on the Successors, then stick to it even though you might feel you are short-changing by not adding Iberia, because to be honest, Iberia, Germania and Gaul has as much of an impact on the Diadachoi as the fall of the Indo-Greek Kingdom of Bactria did on the early Principate... i.e. none. So why add them?

Personally I would chop the map down, use the new big RTR7 map (no, I don't know anything "insider" about it - just the initial screenshots that were released) and focus just on Illyria/Greece/Macedon, Asia Minor, Egypt, Arabia and the East along with a decent part of India to account for Porus' kingdom that stretched East of the Hydespes. Focus mods IMHO are so much better than the "me too" everything-and-the-kitchen-sink mods, especially when we already have an excellent grand-strategic mod (RTR) that covers all the important parts of the ancient world.

Personally I would modify it as:

    The Republic of Rome
    The Hellenic League
    The Satrapy of Atropatene
    Kingdom of Macedon
    Ptolemaic Empire
    Seleucid Empire
    Republic of Carthage
    Satrapy of Parthia
    Antigonid Kingdom
    Illyrians
    Satrapy of Armenia
    Lysimachid Kingdom
    Kingdom of Sikelia
    Sarmatians
    Satrapy of Bactria
    Thrace
    Mauryans
    Pontus
    Pergamon
    Nebataea
    Arabian Tribes
Pontus and Pergamon were a direct result of the War of the Diadachoi, and the Mauryan empire was given its start after Chandragupta defeated Seleucus I in 305 BC after which he gave up large parts of his kingdom, but in return recieved several hundred elephants which were used at Ippsus in 301 BC - and I don't think we need to go into much detail so see why that was so important. Both Nebataea and Arabia would be incredibly important not only because Alexander the Great planned to invade Arabia, but they were important players and leaving them out would be a bit odd.

Thanks for the input, but I must clarify something. This is just a mini-mod of RTR 6.0 with an earlier start date, etc...it's not a complete conversion. I personally don't like when maps are cut down. It seems to reduce the grand strategic aspect of the game.

While Alexander was fighting the Persians in the east, Sicily was fighting Carthage in the west. Agathokles of Syracuse had himself crowned King of Sicily in emulation of the Diadochi. Sicily is a quasi-Diadochi kingdom in this mod, as the protector of the Western Greeks. If Sicily is to have the position I intended in the mod, I must have a proper Carthage, and Iberia is essential to Carthage. The Gauls are also very important, and such a powerful faction will need a Germania (and Iberia) at their backs for balance.

This all aside, I think your suggestion about including Nabataea is worth considering. As I said previously it is a tentative faction list, and will probably change (at least the ex Scipii and possibly the Brutii) as I continue to play test.

Thrace will not be included, as the Lysimachid kingdom is centered in Thrace. But, the Gauls will hold everything from the Atlantic to the Black sea.

As I said before, I have alot of testing to do before this is all finalized.
