Default Get rid of family members to solve your money problems

Do you have cash problems? Is your treasury bleeding more than a haemophiliac? Find too much money is being taken out of the till? Then there is one easy solution: get rid of your family members! Just move them out of your cities and send them for a nice long holiday in the countryside, coupled with a bit of brigand hunting. Most of the time, you'll find your decifit might turn into a profit and your citizens will be happier to get rid of the lazy scroungers!
This what I just did in my ERE campaign. I had gone up to about 40000 dinarii, then I just plumeted overnight. At one point, the exchequer was just gushing out money at the rate of about 9000 florins a turn. I was reaching the bottom when I decided that I should try to take my family members out of the cities, and I soon had a pretty sound annual profit coming my way (6000 dinarii per turn). My treasury did slump that turn to the lowest point ever, just two dinarii, but that was because the Goths plundered Thessalonika.
Now I'm going smash those Sassanids once and for all and take back old Constantinople!

Thats how it was in real life. the imperial family spent most of their time plotting against each other instead of the enemy

ya, but for the sake of gameplay dont you think they'd make it so that at least some of your family members are profitable. 99% of my family members in my WRE campaign just drained the money right out

Mayby u guys are just bad builders?(famly members building)=P
But anyhow i dont have the same problem:S
Well if i find someone who'd rather go for the enemy religion i just send him to death...
And all i know for having good family members is that u always get good traits if u make alot of heroic victorys with one charachter
You have a certain mentality, a "you vs them" and i know it is hard to see, but it is only your imagination which makes up enemies everywhere. I haven't professed anything but being neutral so why Do you feel the need to defend yourself from me?. Truly What are you defending? when there is nobody attacking?

The thing is is that bodyguard units are hella expensive when it comes to upkeep.

Yup, in general my family members usualy suck. I have to be really careful with academys and battles to enable my empire to have strong family members in the future. I have to think into the future and eventualy most of my family members end up being pretty decent. But there is always that one family that really sucks and just keeps on sucking with each new son.

that method has worked for me before, but suddenly in my ERE campaign my governerors are almost entirely profitable. most of my governors have lots of influence (three or more) and many of them have building and trade ancillaries/traits that are making me very profitable. One family member in particulary has 5 managment and 10 influence, any city he goes or conquers almost instantly becomes profitable. Of course it doesn't help that he has an elite army with him to put the people in their places. Anyways moving family members outside of a city has helped me before too.

    Default It's fixable...

It may be somewhat realistic, but it became too much for me. The worst bit was the way family members would get the 'lover of beauty' trait within one turn of being in a city. All you have to do to fix this is go to your export_descr_character_traits file and, under the traits you don't want Roman family members to get, add the line, 'ExcludeCultures roman'. That should fix your treasury right up.

Alternately, you can simply change what those worst traits do, cutting out the bad effects of some traits. However, I preferred the former route of simply excluding cultures. While I was at it, I allowed barbarians to acquire some of those traits from which they had been barred. Since characters only get traits such as 'lover of beauty' in highly developed cities (basically, Roman cities), this can symbolize the astounding rapidity with which many ferocious barbarian warlords picked up the worst aspects of civilized culture.

Well, their unkeep is UNREALISTIC. For the time being I just halved their unkeep, not doing so the game would become really absurd, surrealistic I'd even say. Normally were useless family members put into some useless position. Not every one become general or governor.
