Default Me about the SPQR -mod.

Well, after some REALLY frustrating days, I finally got SPQR to function, and allthough I have to restart the computer between each time I play R:TW/SPQR or else it won't play again, I'm really enjoying what I see here.

Having played a bunch of custom battles to test things out, there are a number of things I felt I needed to comment on. Bear with me here:

Firstly, I was overjoyed when I fought a battle against The Greek Cities and found you had come up with something you called "Sword Hoplites". I've allways thought the Greeks were really cool, as I especially love their helmets, but found phalanx after phalanx after phalanx to be a rather boring sight on the battlefield. These were way cool. A simple, subtle, yet effective idea there.

Secondly, I also found that the Gauls, Britons etc. -barbarians are much harder on the battlefield. When fighting them with Hastati and Principes and the like; and even with Republican kohorts, I have to struggle a lot more to win than before, where they would all turn tail and rout at the slightest sign of resistance.

I also love the unit textures, animations, the way the attack-frequency of the warriors fighting has been tuned up, the way the textures wasn't so hard on my computer as I'd think and more. But there is stilll something, though.

The late kohorts, ("Imperial"?), still seems to own anyone. When I'm fighting with them, the barbarians and most other enemies seems to rout just as fast as before, and there never gets to be a real battle before everyone flees the field. This is a damn shame because the late kohorts are the absolutely coolest ones, and there can seemingly never be any battles with them on the field. So I wonder: Do the late legionaries have any natural enemies at all? What infantry is the best for fighting late legionaries? Not counting other Romans and elite units of course. It may be just me, but my lust for long battles is not really quenched that way.

That said, the game looks like the one R:TW was meant to be in the first place... absolutely splendid job!

try 2 gold chevron Chosen German axemen (which is what the AI will start to send against you in a campaign)

I agree, sword hoplites are great - it's also worth noting that Spartans don't fight in a phalanx in SPQR, which to my mind makes them a lot harder to fight against.

The imperial cohorts are good but you don’t get them until a lot latter on in the game. Also the are subject to the AOR (area or Recruitment) so you can no longer build Roman legionnaires in Persia or Africa. Try to think of them as a reward for surviving that long into the game, also don’t build whole stacks of First imperial Cohorts (limit them to 1 per Legion).

The best infantry for beating late legionaries is SPQR’s Praetorians and mercenary Elephants. Other then that its just use standard tactics i.e. flanking them, splitting away from the main body of the army, attack from behind etc.

Also don’t forget the Shield Wall formation (works by using the old loose formation button) for Roman troops, it can make a lot difference when fighting Barbarian armies. Personally I like to use it to make the attackers tired so when they reach the 2nd line they are already exhausted which makes killing what left very easy. Others like to use the shield wall to pin the enemy so their cavalry can move round the backs ad surround them. Either way its up to you, but I would say if you enemy has lots of experienced troops with a good general using my tactic would yield better results, however if the enemy are green then feel free to smash them with cavalry and what not.

Yeah, I too noticed that the Spartans didn't fight in a phalanx. at first I thought "Hmmm... why don't they have hoplite-animations...?", and then I was like "Eureka!"

Anyway, so I gather that late Roman Kohorts are a some sort of elite now? Also, cavalry seems to have been toned down... that's good indeed. BTW, is the "Shield Wall" -formation courtesy of LT? I can't remember having seen it in vanilla, but then I hardly used special formations...

And don't worry. I have better taste than making an army of First Kohorts. I mainly stick to one, if any.

Imperial Cohorts are used late in the campaign and usually fight Silver-gold chevroned troops. Thats why they are so good, that and the fact that they usually did win historicly.

I see. I was still thinking of them as a pretty standard troop-type, you see. I still think "Legionaire = common grunt" for whatever reason. :sweatingb

The legionaire was a very expensive grunt and I'm sure the Roman generals looked at them as more then just grants and more as the crack troops of every legion. The Romans even intorduced field medics because the Romans couldn't afford to have their troops just die of their injuries.

I doubt it, the Romans were the first professional army of the ancient area.

I've heard the Egyptians had a rather... professional command chain and battlefield hierarchy, if of course nowhere near the actual battlefield orginization of the Romans. - Guess that doesn't quite enter the same league as the Romans, but...

I've never heard anything about them having medics though... so I guess your point remains the same.

In my defence, the only reason it's still there, is because I can't seem to find a way to delete it...

Oh yeah the Imperial cohorts are the strongest in the game next to the praetorians IMO, but historically they pwned everyone too. They were called the mules of Rome or something like that becuase each legionnaire had to carry 50-60 kgs of supplies to make the supply train smaller. Imagine what that did to their stamina and strength. They probably felt as light as feathers when they went to battle.

IB like another posted stated The Imperial Cohorts have a tough time later when Experienced Enemies attack.

YOu have only so many choices, remove experience and have perfect balanced units upfront, which offers no variety BTW, or you make the units balanced but historical and allow for Experience which makes for variety. I went for the latter. Also Romans have less morale than the otherfactions because the AI doesnt replenish units like the player, so therefore never gets experience that way, but the player does. Plus this make your Vertrans MORE important and then the game comes down to tactics and strategy than Spamming the most troops.

I don't mean to sound patronizing and I apologies if I do but you do know what a professional army is, don’t you?
