I have Medieval II Total War Gold. Do I need patch v1.2? It is taking a long time to download.

On the options menu, if you have kingdoms 1.5 installed it will say 1.5 or 1.05 for any kingdoms campaign and 1.3 for the grand campaign. So unless it says 1.0, which I don't think was ever in a gold edition, you should be at 1.2 already.

Thanks. It says I have 1.02 in the grand campaign and 1.04 in the kingdoms campaign. So it looks like I need 1.2

No 1.02 is the 1.2 patch, you just need the 1.5 (1.05 is the same thing) patch.

Patch 1.2 is good enough if you only plan to play the vanilla campaign.

but isn't 1.5 supposed to improve the 1.2 ? (the vanilla version too)

I do not know if the 1.5 Kingdoms patch will also apply to the vanilla campaign. Its changelog indicates that most of it are Kingdoms specific. And then there is this:

Byzantine can now construct a Marksmanship Range.
According to honga.net, Byzantine cannot construct a Markmanship Range in vanilla campaign but may do so in Kingdoms: Crusades. If players with the 1.5 patch can confirm that Byzantine still may not construct a Marksmanship range, then we may be able to conclude that the 1.5 patch is of no relevance to vanilla campaign players.

Hmm ... I think Game in Oxford Street have sold me a dud.

If I install the patch 1.2 will I be able to play existing saved games, or will I need to start again?

The pack from Game (I bought earlier this year) has Medieval II Total War - Gold Edition - Medieval II Total War Kingdoms on the pack. On Disc 1 and Disc 2 it says Medieval II Total War Gold Edition. HOWEVER, the disc for playing says only Medieval II Total WAr - The Game: Disc 1.

When I launch the game with The Game disc there is no option for Kingdoms, Americas, Teutonic etc. There is when I put the first install disc in. If I select the option to play there it asks me to load the correct disc.

On launching with Game Disc 1 when I look at the Options menu it says Version 1.0 in the top right corner.

    Grrr ...

So, will installing 1.2 overwrite existing saved games?

It won't. You can even load save games from 1.0 in game patched with the 1.2 patch. But you may find the experience to be different, like the merchants sitting on resources become actually useful and there are a lot more mining opportunities (mines at York, London and Toulouse to name a few). Starting over to experience the difference may be quite tempting.

Ok I was able to download 1.05. When I tried to install it, it said problem installing each of the 4 kingdoms variants. After reading the read me it said there is a separate 1.5 patch for Kingdoms gold, but I only saw 1, 1.5 patch in the downloads. anyone have any ideas what I am doing wrong?
