Default Has anyone tried a economic/peaceful campaign

I'm talking about a campaign where you just sit back and relax, watch your princes grow old and see your villages turn into major cities. I was considering doing this in SS with Venice, I was considering taking some Balkan provinces and a island province here and there but then the Byzantines came up and attacked me at Bologna(I purchased it for around 25k florins from HRE) now I'm plummeting and abusing the Byzantines..I was thinking about being England and just conquering all of England/Ireland and just build up my economy and populations then around many years later conquer do a blitzkrieg on Europe.

Did any of you guys try a campaign like this? If so can you please describe it and show some pics. Thank you.

Yeh, Scotland, just conquer Scotland proper, Dublin and York if you want. Sit back and watch the world unfold, I do it all the time.

Denmark is good on vanilla. Take Hamburg, of course. Turn Oslo into a city, make lots of spies, and watch 'em go to it.

Everytime I try something like that, I always get dragged into war by another faction.
And I´m not very good at "forgive and forget", so I take revenge, and do it good!
By the time those wars are over, someone else always drags me into another war, and then it goes on like that.
I simply CAN´T just sit back when my enemies invade me over and over again without retaliating, I just can´t!

Im currently playing a turtle campaign as England, im now at turn 112.

I first conquered England & isles, got bored after a while so I decided to conquer those nice little islands in the mediterean, they make great trading cities. After a crusade on Jerusalem I thought it'd be a good idea to reinvent christianity in the holy lands... >: )

Btw Im playing Darthmod 1.4, if you were wondering.

turtle is the perfect word for it..

I like your campaign, i think I'm going to try the same thing. Conquer all of the British Isles, wait, wait, then conquer the Norway and Denmark, wait, wait, then conquer all those islands near Italy and greece.

Then I make a push into Italy!

Yeah Silverheart, I know what you mean. The AI does its best to goad you into action whatever your best intentions are :d

Hupsel - taking the Middle East doesn't look like that much of a turtle ^^

Its possible to have a less aggressive style of play, but it is best used when you play as a faction that can recruit excellent units at the city settlements - easier to defend, and also for the free upkeeps -The Italian factions, the byzantines, the scottish, or the Moors are good examples. You have to focus on good diplomacy with your neighbours and try to get allegiances and keep them. You will end up fighint someone, but the aim is to make it so you're only enemies with one faction at a time and you can even try to get new settlements and then get a ceasefire - war to expand a little, rather than to anhilate your opponent.

This is an amazing AAR from a guy who did just what you are talking about with the Scottish. It is quite interesting and even has an awesome twist towards the end. http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=323950

yup, doing the same exact thing in my SS camp. I sold the province in France(caen) to the Genose for around 15k, raised some Florins and just totally wrecked through Scotland. I sent like 4 full stocks and conquered them in like 4 turns, they barely had any resistance but they managed to conquer Bruges somehow with the soldiers that fled my onslaught.. Now I'm excommunicated and waiting a bit to take over Ireland although I can conquer it now. I kinda want some advanced military units and gonna shower them with archers.

After that I'm going to sit back and wait a couple of towns, have low taxes in my cities so they all grow and then conquer Norwegian islands. I also plan to take the islands around Italy or possibly a North African province so my boys have a little vacation getaway

I play a non-agressive campaign everytime, with every faction.

For example, as France I take the whole of France, as well as the two Italian islands in the Mediterranean, which adds up to a total of 14 regions, (mind you, there are 100 regions in vanilla) which means having so many fairly rich lands will attract jealous looks from thy neighbours. Southern regions will be under constant attack from countless Italian militias; North and Northeast will face fierce warriors of England and Holy Roman Empire; whereas the Southwest will fight Iberian skirmishers. French allies - Moors, Scotland, Poland, Papal States won't be much of a help. Boy, oh boy. That sure is scary!

Being a turtle is not literally about hiding your head in the shell. It's about using that shell as a shield to deflect enemy's first hit.
IE Scotland, England and Denmark are not the only turtles, m'kay.

This is thoroughly impossible unless you use cheats to move your armies over to the Americas, maybe crush the Aztecs, and give away your Old World settlements. The AI is belligerent enough to make Hitler look like a hippie.

I have peaceful campaigns almost everytime. Maybe conquer one factions for power (like moors with Portugal) and then give money to spain and peace. Or I did a scotland turtle campaign, a english one, and a Danish one. Its fun.

Playing as Spain I took the Iberian Peninsula and turtled for the next few hundred turns. First the Byzantines conquered most of the Middle East and Eastern Europe, then the Mongols conquered the Middle East, Africa, and much of Europe, and then the Timurids came along and ed up. They took EVERYTHING except for Iberia, and I went across the ocean to the new world. I kept some factions alive by giving them a few regions, but kept most for myself so I could fund the inevitable war against the Timurids....which I lost.

Playing as England, took the Isles, and Northern France, border with HRE and Milan, my allies. Been allied for over a hundred turns, no backstabbing! I've never had Alliances like this with any nation I share long borders with.

Leaf-Fan-Forever - I would predict that's because you're not holding any of your allies' target territories. Obviously not Dijon. Do you have Paris, or does Milan? Who has Antwerp? I'm curious.

My guys always grow old, what are you talking about? They have so many hitpoints a catapult couldn't kill them!

I actually haven't turtled. It might be interesting as an already large faction like the Byzies, HRE, or Egypt, but otherwise I'd be bored out of my mind with five freaking provinces.
