Ugh, why do I prefer older music?

Im only 22, and I prefer songs from the 70s, 80s and 90s. This is highly atypical and totally different from my peers and is totally weird. When I club, I enjoy disco and dance music a lot more compared to today's R&B and hip hop. I just don't get today's American Idol and X Factor influenced music. Am I the only one who feels this way? My theory is that the crappy music from the past has largely been forgotten, and the ones that we listen to today are the ones good enough that are remembered.

Because most modern music is terrible.

Because, as a broad generalization, popular music is terrible, and the popular music from the past has largely been forgotten as the flavor of the times have changed. Meanwhile, there's such a glut of crappy popular modern music pushed in a dozen different mediums that the good stuff is harder to find, and takes longer to float to the top.

I have to ask. What music from the 70s?

I was also going to say most music from the 60s and 70s is terrible. Like the OP said, it's just that we remember what is good and that's what gets replayed. I'm sure a few years from now the good music of the noughties will be collectively recognised as every previous decade's artists and albums have been.

This, basically. Sturgeon's Law seems to be acting much more ferociously on modern music.

Pop music isn't always terrible. Madonna of the past is definitely listenable. Cyndi Lauper and Bananarama have generated many hits that live on today. And then it also depends on how you define pop music. Now, Jonas Brothers and Justin Bieber are terrible.

There's good stuff in the charts right now. Not that hard to find.

lol idk. When I look at the "charts" in my country its a bunch of music like Kanye West or Ke$ha.

In the US music that charts is usually that kind. IDK what you get in the UK on your charts.

Oh please, most music in the charts is reasonable. Just because it isn't old doesn't mean it can't become a classic.

I mean sure, you've got those bands like the Black Eyed Peas but I bet that if songs like Just the way you are and Christmas Lights were from the 90's you would like them too.

Well Biffy Clyro and The Pogues are in the charts, but since Biffy Clyro is only there, because people only brought it because the x-factor guy ruined it with a copy and got it to number one and the pogues song isnt exactly new, it doesnt change my mind about most popular music being crap. I do like alot of modern bands, they just aren't popular with the mainstream, but that doesnt bother me .

I agree. I really don't like most new music. There's some stuff I like, like Nickleback (dodges stones) and Cage The Elephant, but the rest is mostly crap.
