Default Battle speed & other inquiries

Salve, a few questions about the mod, if some of you would be so kind to answer -

First, is there a way to up the battle speed? I'm aware that patch 2.1 actually tried to address that issue, but I still find it to be irritating. Sieges are a terrible mess (appropriately so, you might say), and I often find myself surrounding 25 men with 500 for such a long time to no effect. I appreciate the idea to make battles more realistic, but I find it to be quite the grind as the battles pile up and the campaign progresses.

Also, I don't know if it's just me but I find myself to be constantly posititioning my missiles troops (slingers and such) behind enemy line to thin their numbers. It's much more effective than hammer and anvil cavalry charges (as cavalry is so fragile ; forget about charging a unit of spearmen, even in the back). Now, beside the fact that the AI is too dumb to prevent this, I can't quite figure out how such a tactic would be valid - the problem here is that the infantry that is fighting can't seem to figure out how to shield from the missile units behind them, so they are summarily stoned to death. There should be some way to prevent this, just as units will react to cavalry charging them in the back (so it's not an AI issue ; if the AI did the same thing to me my units would have no way to protect themselves). Any ideas about this, except "don't use that tactic"?

Another question - how are we supposed to "breed" generals in this mod, so to speak? Again I understand the idea was that good generals would be hard to build and so on, but I find myself using the same guys in battles after battles and they don't get any good traits at all. If anything, as the romans I constantly get the "political general" trait. Worst offense, I even got a "coward" trait after winning a heroic victory.

    Thanks for the answers.

    Hi Julus

What settings are you playing at ? H/H or H/VH ?

Regards the use of slingers and other missile troops I agree that at times lower quality troops like Levy Pikemen are really hard to break even with a cavalry charge from the rear - I do that quiet often whether its pikemen or spearman but timings everything. Sometimes to a make the enemy break I position my slingers slightly to the rear and attack their side/rear with cavalry and infantry.

Breeding Generals - its all down to how you build up your cities. For the Seleucids my biggest problem with them has always been their sky high corruption and really bad traits (apart from the faction leader) so in the last two campaigns the primary goal is to build academy's, buildings of law, Temples of Law (Zeus, hera, etc) and then depending on their original traits get them out fighting (esp if theyre bad) or governing. Here's my current best General - after winning a few battles against the Parthians 10 years in:

Age 26 - no command stars, so -so traits.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Age 37 - 11 years later and numerous victories inc 2-3 heroic

Age 46 - 14 + victories against the Parthians, 10 star General, 3 gold chevrons.

If you search the forum there's been several posts on the traits and how some family members seem to instantly get the "coward trait" and other poor traits, etc even after winning an heroic battle.

I'm playing H/H. I assume VH wouldn't quite improve (speed up) the battle speed.

    Interesting answer, thanks.

Check out DVK's reply here regards the coward trait etc:

So next patch it should be fixed.

Gamewise.. I play on H/H as well, so I don't think changing to VH will make much difference in the battle speed, although I could be wrong.

somehow yes it does....but it will only slow battles down....In VH the AI gets +7 morale which means that troops almost never rout.
So even unarmoured archers will fight to death against heavy cataphracts thus resulting
in longer battles as the player is nearly unable to rout the enemy army.

Have your new generals stay in a city with academies and temples for 5-10 turns and he will gain some good traits. Low taxes will give traits like poor farmer and trader. Rioting cities will give harsh ruler traits. Staying in a settlement for too long will also give u bad traits since the generals get bored, start to drink and go lunatic-mode while wasting all money. Academies are the main source of good ancilliaries.

Right now in my Armenian campaign I have 3-4 8-10 star generals (age 45-55). They have fought normal battles and only rarely even get involved in combat. What my generals do is stand behind infantryline and boost my infantry (Spirits raised by general's encouragements). This way they seem to get "proven tactician" and such traits. They don't have "veteran warrior" or nothing like those combat traits u get from fighting, but the do get many tactician traits.
