    Default asd... medieval just will not run

    dear all,

    i really hope someone can help me. i have a new pc (amd X6 1090T, 4 ghz ram, radeon 6800, catalyst driver 10.10, win XP) and kindoms alsways crashes back to desktop after a few seconds, very shortly i can see the ingame screen. i reinstalled all components (medieval 2 + patches, then kingdoms plus patch to 1.5) and it simply wont work..

    i love medieval and i really hoped to play it

    has anybody an idea what i can do?

    i allready tried the graphics tweaks (force 2xAA, dxdiag..) but it didn't help

    i attached (hope it works) the copied systems log, there seems to be a whole array of files missing ..

    it would be wonderful if anybody knows what the problem is!

    Have you unpacked the game?

    Do you have the CCC set to "application controlled"?

    thank you very much irishron!

    i installed it according to the manual and all guides i could find, the MTW folder is 11 gb big with +1.100 files so i think it installed fine.

    i do not know what you mean by CCC but i tried to set the Antialaising (and anisotropic filtering) to 2x and also leave it at application controlled. is this the CCC you meant?

    Catalyst Control Center is CCC and it's best to set it application controlled and set the AA, AF, etc. ingame. This will keep the two settings from trying to override each other.

    This game does have problems with 1gb cards. It can be done but it takes time and patience to get it to pull up the first time.

    Are you clicking on kingdoms.exe or one of the Kingdoms campaigns?

    i'm clicking kingdoms.exe ... and yes, i could start one of the americas campains and actually it went through to the menu, but since i want to play it with stainless steel (i guess i will try that mod first) i have to get the kingdoms.exe running...

    hmmm yes i also read here somewhere that newer systems have problems with MTW2, does this mean its solvable andi have a chance to get the game up and running? this would be wonderful

    Kingdoms.exe is not a standalone application. You have to play one of the Kingdoms campaigns or a Kingdoms mod to use it.

    Try one of the campaigns before getting too worried.

    hmmm... it seems i can now run medieval 2 with StainlessSteel 6.3 but whenever i want to change screen resolution (its on 1024x768 ) it crashes back to the desktop

    and i cannot start any of the kingdoms campains... it crashes right away

    but you brought me one step closer, thank you a lot for that!

    in the SS 6.3 systems log there are still a lot of error messages (mostly not found *.TGAs)

    .TGAs won't cause crashes. If you can start Stainless Steel, you are on your way. The size of your monitor and the resolutions it supports has a lot to do with your game resolution.

    You can try doing it manually in the medieval2.preferences.cfg. Set it read-only when done or the game will rewrite it.

    ...And possibly disable the UAC as well? Have we really ever figured out why some systems will generate a Preferences file while others wont? I know a campaign has to be started but it seems to me that there are too many that come here claiming to get into a game and still not have a usable .cfg.

    Well UAC plays hell with this game for sure but I can't see it hiding .cfg files in the Store - that's before it's time. But then again UAC is pretty pernicious. Hard call here without diving into the folder structure. Have you seen some .cfg files stored on Vista/Win7 OS that would have resided in the main folder of M2 on an XP machine?

    Before I learned the lesson the hard way when I first got Vista, yes. That's when I made up my mind never, again.
