Honestly it's the best Genre why aren't there westerns anymore. Plus with Europe in the you could still film some cheap movies in Italy I bet. Or go crazy and film it in the Americas.

I'd like to see the Dark Tower get done before I become bitter and won't enjoy it, but I'll settle for something less so.

Heck Ennio Morricone and Eastwood are still alive. Let's get them to make some more classics before he passes.

There've been plenty of recent Westerns. Mostly in the late 1980's, but there were some later. Especially if you count post-modern blending with other genres; in which case you can include Cowboy Bebop and Kill Bill as examples (shining ones, in my opinion) of the Western genre.
If anything, it's experiencing a resurgence in the past couple years, with 3:10 to Yuma, Red Read Revolver, Red Dead Redemption, and the upcoming adaptation of True Grit.

3:10 To Yuma was the latest and I thought it was a very good movie.

I took this screen capture from a Rotten Tomatoes review of True Grit. It is my belief that Matt Damon smoking a pipe is alone enough to merit seeing the movie.

There is like a western every other year. So I say there are plenty of Westerns out there being made. It is an over done theme though so not too many get made anymore without some real thought put into them.

You can say that about any genre. If you boil a plot down enough you only have a very limited number of actual stories you could tell.

Yeah, basically everything boils down to 'protagonist faces adversity and overcomes it' if you really want to.

Well there was an resurgence in the nineties when dances with wolves came out and Eastwood made some great films, like Unforgiven which is awesome.

I hear the series "Deadwood" was really, really good. In fact, I may check it out as snow as somewhat scuppered my plans for going to work today. I love the Sergio Leone films most though. It's all about Clint Eastwood.

Yeah Deadwood was great. Too bad it didn't continue. But I think there are plenty of westerns out there, they just aren't one of the most popular genres anymore like they used to be. Appaloosa was a recent one as well and while parts were slow it wasn't too bad if you like westerns.
