DVD-No pain for playing mods, Can get trashed by scratches etc.
Steam-Pain for playing mods and can re-download if you format the PC etc.

It can also depend on the price. In the game shop where I live, M2TW costs only 5 euros, so it was cheaper than the Steam game

Can anyone shed light on why the Steam versions for TW games and for some other games are such a PITA? I asked over at gamespot.com if anyone there has trouble with mods and the answer is a resounding 'no'. Someone said he's had no trouble playing a Napoleon mod. I am not understanding why Steam can be a PITA for some mods and not for others.

It's because an average gamer is not a computer techy, one needs to know about the new OS a bit before he\she can play a mod on Steam.
People don't read the FAQ's and install instructions and that's why steam is a pain.

As far as some mods are concerned mods like SS6.3 uses a custom launcher of it'a own that can't be linked with steam version of M2TW. So people can't play it or have problem running it.

CD/DVD every time. Steam is a nightmare if you uninstall a game and then try to reinstall it, especially if a mod is involved. I have had allsorts of problems with Steam and the 'Customer Service' is terrible, e.g. I uninstalled Napoleon (with the Orient mod), when I reinstalled Napoleon it wouldn't play, until I uninstalled and reinstalled Steam, during which time I lost all my achievements (altho Steam Customer Service insist they are still there, I can't see them and I am winning achievements for the second time!), there was also no sound on the reinstall due to files that remained in the Steam folder that should have been removed. And, finally, I don't have the quickest of internet connections, which means starting the game can be very, very slow. Also, there is a lot of internet activity when I boot up my PC thanks to Steam, which slows down my start up time considerably... I hate Steam!

Steam is only ok if you don't use mods, have good internet or won't upgrade your computer OS at all
    Null

CD/DVD, especially if you are getting Kingdoms, as well. Because, in addition to the modding reasons above (and the fact that SS 6.3 is a must have) I bet it would be an epic download on Steam, and unless you have an awesome internet connection (or lots of patience), it would take forever to download. With kingdoms, the game probably approaches 10 Gb.
