    Default Mongol invasion

I have a georgian campaign going and plan on defending Samarqand against the mongols... this is my first time attempting to fight them and could use some info.

How many stacks do they arrive with?
What is the composition of their armies?
How many stacks will they lay siege with?
Do they have siege engines like the crusader armies that attack constantinople?
Are they programmed to attack Samarqand no matter what?
Do their stacks all pick a different side of the city to siege?

I plan on using the stakes of my Metsivokhe to massacre their horsies <3 I can also retreat to a bridge and try the same trick there but knowing the ai it will surround me on both sides

    stupid sexy mongols

The mongols have finally arrived, how can I give you all a screeny? I have 3 stacks... one in samarqand, one on the samar bridge and another on the bukhara bridge. I pressed print screen and attempted to paste the image into paint but nothing happened

No need to paste anything. Just open up you Medieval 2 directory, look for a folder named "tgas" and you will find the screenshot there. It will be in .tga format. IrfanView is a free software for viewing and converting these images.

ah right thank you! Damn those mongols are tough, most of their units are elite quality and their infantry in particular are godlike... not even sharpened stakes could save me. I took quite a few stacks down with me including 2 khans but their zerg was too strong. Khwarezm is doomed

Can you please upload the save file from that screenshot? I would love to play those battles!

sure thing... I included the 'desc unit' because it is modified by the 'increased unit size' submod, I also made a few changes.

I made all bodyguards 20 instead of 15 (I always hated how they have to gradually reach their full size over a period of turns... now they all start out at 50) to match the horse archer guards, I also changed the georgian generals unit from horse archer to lancer, they lack the ability to recruit lancers for a long time whilst having plentiful (albiet crap) georgian horse archers and superior mercenary horse archers to choose from

    I also use:
    burreks blood no dirt
    improved loading screens

^I doubt these 2 will impact the save working

Don't forget to add pictures of massacred mongol armies... I did not know how easy it is to create snapshots so I failed it

The save file worked without having to make any changes, though I guess the mod you had made the economy a lot different, I started off with 380,000 cash I panic-expanded farms in every city controlled and by the time I had wasted all cash I was just going -1200 per turn.

How are you handling the mongols? I declared war on them right away hoping they would ignore Khwarezm, but they seiged balkh 2 times and after the second time I had infiltrated balkh with spies and I occupied it, repaired the walls and fortified it with a stack of your best infantry, while blocking every bridge that allows entrance to samarqand. I've fought 2 sieges so far in balkh, the stakes that those archers georgia has makes it almost impossible to loose a fortress.. Atm, I am under attack on a bridge where I got mainly cavalry and I think I will loose the battle, if I am lucky I might win but it will come at a great cost, the mongols got catapults and lots of infantry..

economy has been left untouched... I made alot of money as the game progressed (reaching 1219 is alot of turns) by developing wealthy cities in the empire. Are the romans giving you any trouble? In my game they keep sieging Antioch (which costs me 7k a turn each time they do it - 8k a turn from antioch but when sieged 1k) with naval armies and land based ones that they march through armenian cilicia. I fought the mongols on bridges... some bridges are superior to others for defense. I failed against the mongols on my first try... there are just too many of em and the quality of their units is exceptional. When they sieged samarqand they did so with 2 stacks... the first cavalry stack was massacred when they ran into the city but the supporting army only walked over them You have no idea how much that upset me... to see thousands of their horses walking safely over my stakes. I am glad the save worked fine without the need for modification... your georgian bodyguard are still horsearchers?

I declared war on the mongs by attacking them with that afghan unit.. you probably did the same? They also went straight for the khwarezmians in my campaign, though not Balkh... I think the ghaznis still own that but am uncertain. They marched to bukhara and then urgench
before coming back round for me.

I recommend fighting them as much as possible on the bridge to the right of urgench, there is a bridge directly to the south of urgench... the one to the right of that, I might try again soon and use the same tactic. It's the best bridge for 'staking' as you can plant them pretty much anywhere

Sorry I meant Bukhara, not balkh.

Yeah the romans sieged Antioch after first turn but I defeated their army with like 200 losses on my side, after that ere started war against koj, they have been keeping eachother busy ever since.

I was gonna declare with the afghan unit but I went with your assassins first, killing jebe (!!) with one and second try failed = war.

Yes my bodyguards are HA, useless HA for that matter -.- But your stacks in the area have been superb, I have now lost Bukhara to mongols after defending it succesfully 4 times and now I do not have enough troops to retake it, I only have 3 stacks left and samarqand is empty. I have fought 2 battles at bridges (3 actually, but 1 battle the mongols never tried to cross the bridge and I always have my troops in safe distance from archers untill they start crossing so battle ended with 30 dead on both sides) and those 2 battles I have won big time, killing Chinggis Khan in the latest! But now I am under attack on the bridge again and I will loose the battle.

Some advice about horses walking over stakes: Horse units will walk if it is not possible to engage enemy units. Example, if you are defending a fortress, you have 1 unit at gate and stakes behind gates, enemy will charge through the gate untill this unit is dead, once it is dead and you have all troops behind 2nd walls, they will start to march and wont die from stakes.

I keep 1 horse unit close to 2nd gate and once 1st gate is breached and defending unit is dead, I move horses outside 2nd gate untill enemy horses have entered city then I retreat back behind 2nd wall and let the archers do their thing.

I think it was because they were another army group... they were walking ever since the first army breached the gate and ran through.

trying to make this work with the new version, getting a battle ctd when fighting the romans... how do I enable the error report file?

also is this the pre kingdoms version? Judging by the date using numbers instead of turns I assume this is the medieval 2 version?

I don't think it matters whether it's for bare M2TW BC version, because that's just EDU. I don't think Kingdoms introduced new features in EDU, and even if it did, we didn't changed much in it, so it should work also with 2.3.

there are some issues, I noticed that certain territories are marked as being owned by another faction despite not being so. For instance one of the caucasus regions controlled by georgia is pink, owned by the solankis despite still being mine. Also some of the units in antioch (which the romans siege hence the battle crash) are not recruitable... I have alot of levy crossbowmen there but I cannot find a place they can be recruited

And these are issues after you installed EDU from here, right?
