About a week ago I bought Empire and all the add-ons. I'm loving the game, the large number of factions, the huge map ... it's a completely new experience for me.

I'm considering buying Napoleon Total War, if only for the opportunity to play in a nineteenth century period. I would like to have experience of playing in a period from 1800-1870 or so. Empire starts at 1700, a little early.

Does Napoleon have a large number of factions? Does it have the same "epic" worldwide feel? From what I've seen, I'm guessing no ... it's just about, well, Napoleon.

So ... is it worth it?

Well it's a fun game, but the scale is much smaller (only in europe, less factions, smaller timescale), so i would say no in your case.

but the map is a lot more detailed with huge regions. And it is the most historically accurate TW to date. The 2 week turns is actually something I really like, still gives you over 200 turns, and there are heaps of good mods out there. My two cents, its a condenced epic game. Far better than ETW, almost reaching the glory RTW lived up to.

I disagree that the scale is smaller. With the "all in one mod" you can play all the factions. It's focused on a smaller area, but the map and detail is enlarged. If you can get it on a Steam sale it's a no-brainer, if not it's still worth it in my book.

    Yes, but not yet.

You only have Empire a week, play it a bit longer, enjoy it some more. Because there is a big chance you wont really enjoy Empire anymore when you got Napoleon. To me Empire just feels very cartoony and incomplete since I got Napoleon.

I do miss the Grand Campaign, the entire world and setting up your own new royal family, Napoleon is very accurate with everything. No real liberty to create your own new dynasty etc. I sort of miss that.

Go ahead play Empire if you like it... but I'd definitely recommend getting Napoleon some day! And if you want to experience more realistic/epic/intense battles, download the mod "Empire in Conflict".

    Definitely maybe!

I put hundreds of hours into ETW. I got NTW when it came out, but was a bit burnt out on the musket era at the time. I revisited it later and got hooked. I currently have 300+ hours online and about a similar number offline in NTW, so I must like it.

It doesn't have huge N.America, Europe, Asia/India scope of E:TW but I think it is superior in every other way.

The graphics and effects are amazing.
    Map much more detailed.
More unit variety, no generic tricorne wearing infantry just dyed different colors. Lots of neat "hero" units, some you have to buy like on ETW but still.
Like the guy said above def. the most historically accurate TW yet. I actually checked out a book on the uniforms of the Napoleonic Wars shortly after I bought the game and...man, they did a pretty darn good job.

Overall: Buy it. If you liked Empire you should like this.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will hold off for now, since I don't have a coupon for Steam and it's thirty bucks ... plus more for the add-ons.

Looks like Steam has it for $22.49 at the moment, and @ $9 for the DLC. I believe I'll take advantage of that when I get home from work today.

If its campaign you want. Empire is much better. Much. Ok so the unifroms arn't quite as accurate etc etc but the scope and variation just dwarfes that of napoleons campaign. Take the naval element for example: in napoleon, if you are britain, you just build a few more ships, sink the french navy, sink the dutch and spanish (might take ten turns) and then the naval element is over, may aswell disband yr fleets. In empire, you gotta fight for the waters of 3 continents and 4 or 5 trade regions it can be a never ending struggle. Napleons campaign was doomed the day they decided to name the game Napoleon. Its just far too constrained by history.

I check Steam frequently, as they often have big sales that are not announced ahead of time. I picked up a second NTW for MP at my house, and it was about half the price of my 1st copy. I'm sure the same thing will happen with Shogun 2. I'll buy it right away, then get another copy for MP once the price falls to about half.
I've logged about 450 hours in NTW online and another 200+ offline, so my opinion on the game may be slightly prejudiced.
