    Default A general mod question

This isn't necessarily concerned with Rome Total War, but since there is such a thriving mod community here, I figured I would ask and in particular to get the perspective of a modder in any answers to my question. I apologize if this is unnecessarily off-topic.

I would like to make a very ambitious mod for this one game, since no one else has a similar creative vision for a mod of it. Unfortunately, I have no real modding experience (like with scripting, modelling, anything like that). While I'm inexperienced with anything to do with computers, I'm great at story-writing and dialogue, and I'm a decent enough mimic to voice-act (unit voices would be a major change for this mod). However, I'm not sure if any modder would want to work with me, even though I'm not a free-loader and would be verymuch able to participate in the project.

What I'm trying to ask, basically, is do I have any right to start a modding project without any 'formal' skills? Or would my proposal to a modder come off as audacious, or lazy, or inconsiderate?

    Thanks.

well to begin with i didn't have any skills what so ever... all you need to do is get used to modding by looking in the tutorials and making your own 'mini-mods' i also think EB is looking for voice actors for some of their units... i do suggest however that to start a modding project you need a decent modeller and skinner because many mods start but never get anywhere because they can't produce anything to spark public interest... good luck with beginning you modding though

It is best to have modding experience if you are going to start a mod.

Thank you for your input. Most of what I would be doing would be making a new campaign (for the game Earth 2160), and so little to none of the work would actually involve skinning or modelling.

Lusted: I know that it is best if I have modding experience. However, what I'm wondering is would it be impossible or impolite for someone like me with no scripting experience to try to start a project with someone who does?

    Again, thank you.

Usually most modders look down on people who start their own mod, yet have no modding skills themselves (trust me, I've seen it countless times). Its not impossible. Take Total War: The Levant for example. Farnan has no modding skills (at least, I don't think) and everyone is very excited with the idea. It all depends really. Is the mod something that many people will love? Is it about a subject or period that many people are interested in? If so, then I don't doubt that you will have modders coming to your rescue. If its not then, well.........you understand what I'm trying to say.

Anyway, good luck with the mod!

    Hello, Naja

Modding on a large scale is all about time and perseverance. If you get some of the conceptual work done first and post it with your request it would help. Many of the large projects here eventually die or stall out because of creative differences but usually it's just a lot of work.

You'd definitely have to show you can bring something to the table to interest any serious modders. Most of whom are probably deep in their own projects now. I'd suggest learning the basics on your own to see if it's something you would even care to do in the long run. It can eat up an enormous amount of time.

    Good Luck, PatWest
