Top Gun is getting a sequel

Not really to sure how I feel about this. I absolutely ing love the first. It's just such an awesome movie-- and really how many great films are out there about modern aerial warfare? Tony Scott has been confirmed as director and they say Maverick may return but not as a leading character.

Now, my problem is that they are talking about doing it and following a UAV pilot's story or some . I'm sorry, but isn't that lame as or what? I really hope they don't go that direction. UAV pilots are trying to get flight wings in the military these days cause they think they are real pilots . You can't make a movie called "Top Gun", the name of the US Navy's Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor Program, or TOP ING GUN and then make it about lame ass UAV pilots. Are UAVs cool? Yes. Are UAV pilots cool? No. Are F18s, F22s and F35s cool? YES. Are the pilots cool? YES. Wtf is he thinking? Besides that I don't even think the US Navy HAS UAVs unless besides some aerial recon ones. He clearly hasn't done any research really. This article says these guys are flying drones from Fallon, NV down by New Mexico that doing missions in Iraq and such. But hey, I'm from Nevada and Fallon is nowhere near New Mexico number one, and number two there is no UAV drone squadron in Fallon. He maybe is thinking of the 11th, 15th, and 17th recon squadrons from the US AIR FORCE in Nellis Air Force Base outside Las Vegas. Wtf Tony?

A better film is new young pilots in F35s going to the Top Gun school or something and maybe you got a new cocky pilot who has flown lots of CAS missions in Iraq and Afghanistan and there are dangers at the school because the pilots are testing the operation limits of the new F35s, accidents happen, people die etc. You put Maverick in there in Viper's original role and I think you already have a way better movie then one about flipping UAV pilots!!

UAV pilots eh? That's not awesome at all and what's the plot going to be about? The main character getting a mouse arm and struggling with the rehabilitation? If they are going to do a sequel they should have awesome cocky people in awesome planes not some random people sitting in front of a screen, I mean how the hell are the audience going to feel worried about the main character? Oh no he lost his plane! Oh wait he's just sitting in front of a god damn screen without any danger present at all. btw what the hell is up with doing a remake or a sequel to every good movie from the eighties?

That's what I'm saying. UAV pilots = laaaame.

Here's my idea that I cooked up when I was taking a shower.

Start of the movie opens with hotshot pilot in an F/A18 flying a CAS mission for some grunts in Afghanistan. To make it action packed and tense the shots can switch between the grunts on the ground being nearly overwhelmed or something-- make the situation look really desperate. Then it cuts to the pilot and his bird getting ready to take of along with his buddy/wingman. These cut back and forth from desperate infantry squad in ambush taking casualties to planes flying in until the scene ends when the mother load of a bomb from the two fighters blow a part the Taliban attacking the patrol. Boom. First scene over, amazing skill on our pilots part for doing the job with the grunt squad so close to 'splosion.

Both pilots get picked to go to Top Gun. They are friends, but also rivals. One is super cocky and is generally considered the best, but he's a party boy and possibly an alcoholic but not in your traditional feel sorry for yourself way, but rather that he just binge drinks/parties. The other guy is more down to Earth, more studious and such. Where the first guy is flying pure, raw skill this other guy is a technical guy. He's awesome because he's precise and because he reads his knowledge and so forth where as the first guy is just a natural.

Boom, they get to Top Gun, they meet Maverick who is their class's main instructor. They also get introduced to the new F-35. They go through their training, pushing the limits of the aircraft along with their fellow pilots. The first pilot, will just call him uhhh 'Soup', he's expecting to win the trophy and be the bad ass. But as the course progresses his buddy uuuhmmm 'Rooster' (placeholders okay) actually takes the lead in all of the events because he's just more precise and less dangerous in his flying yet still very effective. It creates issues for the other guy who is used to being the center of attention and the top dog and then there's tensions between their friendship and so forth cause other guy doesn't see the problem while Soup is mad that he isn't in the lead for Top Gun. he starts to party more and a lot harder and gets in a fight and almost gets kicked out of the school but Maverick keeps him around cause 'he reminds him of someone'. Somewhere along the line an accident happens and one of their classmates die. Oh, so sad. Then training continues and they complete the school. Soup gets his act together thanks in part to Maverick talking to him about stuff in a similar vein as Viper did for Mav in the first one.

They get deployed to South China sea aboard a carrier and after some time out there running training missions they get called up for an actual for whatever reason. The quickest i could think of was a civilian plane accidentally crossing in NK air space and got hit by some sort of AA and is damaged and trying to limp to safety while some NK jets are en route. Soup and Rooster and maybe another plane or two get deployed too and fly out with mission to escort the airliner back to friendly air space. They meet up with the plane and start escorting them and have a weird sort of eerie stand off thing with the NK birds flying around, but they are told to hold fire. More NK jets show up so that they are at a significant disadvantage. From here I thought of several different ways it could go. Either A: NK show off pilot accidentally clips the airliner and then things get hostile and the plane crashes. Everyone engages and aerial warfare ensues. Or B: NK fighter shoots down and destroys airliner and aerial warfare ensues. Or C: Show off NK fighter clips Rooster's plane and he goes down and out of anger and lack of discipline Soup engages the other fighters. The other plane with him is forced to engage to protect him and the airliner and aerial combat ensues. Soup returns to carrier looking at charges for opening up and so forth. I don't the end part could go any direction I suppose.

But yeah, that was my idea for a Top Gun 2 and it took me all of like ten mins to think of.

tbh it does seem pretty interesting, even as a movie. The very idea that UCAVs are getting developed and might completely obsolete the human combat pilots one day, when the designs are refined to allow reduction in cost and greater performance.

A swarm of remote controlled robots might be able to overwhelm the best trained pilots. Fundamentally, aerial warfare is about transferring capital into dead enemies, bombs, missiles, radar, stealth, all boils down to avoiding your own casualties while killing the enemy, and thereby gaining air superiority and dominating even more. In the history of aerial combat it has been most of the time the pilots that are regarded more valuable than the aircraft because of the effort in training them properly. Aircraft themselves are simply tools of war, metal, electronics, engine, fuel, weaponry, aircraft doesn't fly itself either, it sitting in the hangar is worthless.

With unmanned combat aircraft, I guess the theory is simply that even if your drone gets shot down, the operator just "restarts the game" with another plane as funny as it sounds. Therefore the problem with UCAV is I guess, simply to find the perfect balance between performance and manufacturing costs?

It's a pretty sick thought I that some computer nerd would blast a highly trained professional airman flying a sleek fighter jet from the sky. But all's fair in love and war

As a lifetime jet fighter enthusiast, pilot wannabe, etc., I feel this is a great injustice. Might as well film me playing Flight Simulator.

Oh lord not another sequel to another movie.

You should start writing scripts, that would be a great film but fighting against North Korean fighters? I mean having their ancient planes fight against brand new and awesome f-35s wouldn't be far for the North Koreans. However if there is some reasonable explanation for giving the North Koreans good planes it could work, but why not having something go hot near China? Some of their new planes look pretty awesome and are pretty modern.

Well I figure the best way to make up for the crappy NK planes would just to be having two or three of the F35s going up against a ridiculous number of the NK planes. I don't really like the idea of a fight against the Chinese mainly because I don't think it's very realistic AND I would rather not have a movie out there that fans the already considerable paranoia that obstructs the whole US-Sino relationship.

Well you have a point there, but maybe it could be worked into the story that NK for some reason got to buy some Sukhoi Flankers or something like that because I don't think it would be terribly exciting having F-35s fighting against planes that were relevant in the sixties. I just think it would be more interesting to see the F-35s fighting against something a bit more modern massively outnumbering them and mostly winning by their superior skill from the top gun academy.

India vs China vs Pakistan over the Kashmir with Coalition organized of western countries to bring peace? Some sort of resource is discovered in Kashmir which makes this disputed territory worth fighting for.

Eventually conflicting interests start breaking up the coalition and the situation becomes a free for all of sorts with allies becoming enemies...

Yeah, juicy.

As good as that plan sounds (love the two main characters), no air combat movie can ever be better than Memphis Belle.

Well it seems like the MiG-29 is their best fighter so I wouldn't say they are totally back in the 60s. But I suppose maybe there could be the possibility of a sale of 12-18 SU-27s or maybe Shenyang J-11s or something. Maybe that going in they could be told it's NKs best squadron or something and that's why they got them fancy, fancy planes. I guess it wouldn't be such a stretch since we don't really have that solid of information about NK air force to begin with and the enemy in the first Top Gun was the MiG-28, which isn't even a real plane.

Except you can't have some super in depth war scenario. The movie has to be about Top Gun, the pilots and their time in the school with a climax in some quick sortie that is action packed and exciting but not overly deep or needs to be described in detail on screen, just semi-plausible.

While I will certainly agree that the whole UAV idea is total crap, I've just gotta say that you can at least avoid this kind of reasoning. There's a reason these films are called 'fiction'.
