    Default Regular Artillery

Does anyone see any use in these? Compared to howitzers and rockets?

I am talking about lb'r and cavalry lb'r

I have read guides and such but they seem so inferior. I don't understand this? They should be the determent of enemy guns.

I see them as a good on all ranges, while the other artillery types are only good at short range, its an allarounder.

I guess I am blabbering here but I am just baffled over how expensive it is and how semi terrible it is.
Cav arty is so unreliable with it randomly slowing down and the long time it takes to sit down from the horses.

    Ps.

It is to be said that I love ntw, the steps CA (Community communication etc.) are taking is making me feel a new breath over the series survival.

I always use a combination of howitzers and cannons (never rockets, they suck). But yes, arty is basically a pain in the ass to handle in ETW / NTW. You have to babysit them on every step.

Without any sort of experience, artillery in NTW is bad. Use 12-pounders in easy battles to get experience and by experience 3 or 4 you will start seeing proper accuracy. By experience 7-8 the shots hit home a lot of times and they can be really useful.

Normal cannons are very useful against cavalry, they will do lots of damage at long distances; more than howitzers which have less range and hardly hit anything near their range limit.

I'm using my artillery against Napoleon, Davout, Murat... That way I get to kill them and take the bonus morale out too

Well regular arty only have around 550 range so you have to move pretty close and one hill and that general is gone.

Meanwhile rockets will just lob over.

I don't hate going against artillery, I love this I always get games with title ''No rules''

Its just that regular artillery seems so underpar, expensive compared to other forms of arty, sure its good against cavalry but the other arty is good enough as well.

Its not the all around + anti arty as I would love to see it be :/

I do have to agree on that one.
While cannons are much better against other art than howitzers, the advantage should be even greater.
It just takes too long to take the enemy art out with roundshot.

Sorry very strongly disagree with you on this!

From my understanding the game does reflect actual Napoleonic practice & effect in this area - counter battery fire was discouraged because it was considered a waste of ammunition. Best use for the limited ammunition was on formed infantry or cavalry units. Counterbattery fire was usually employed to disrupt or suppress the fire of enemy artillery when it was damaging your troops significantly!

Correct Napoleonic tactical use of artillery was to fire at an angle to maximise the target depth resulting in increased kills.

I have seen french six pounders used with some success. Cheap, accurate, and with a good reload rate, these are an excellent deterrant for cavalry forces, and can do some good canister damage when troops get close. With just two or so of these, you can put a lot of hurt out, and force an enemy to spread out in a way that lets you fight small portions of the enemy at a time.

The only thing capable of breaching a wall quickly, howitzers take time, dont even try with rockets, just give up if you only have rockets, just dont go there, end of!

    Are you using canister?

Several batteries of 6 pounders firing canister can do an amazing amount of damage at short range.

What are overrated are the 12- and 9-pounders - the additional range doesn't really compensate for the slower reloading.

My own beef is the ridiculously slow speed - foot artillery were called that because they moved at the same speed as infantry.

The Napoleon All in One mod fixes all your artillery woes. It increases the range of canister shot to a more accurate level, and increases the power of howitzers, which makes fighting against artillery truly a scary prospect.

I know I wouldn't be caught dead without at least two batteries of cannon and two batteries of howitzers. They're just too damn deadly.
