I checked into it and the only difference I noticed is in the Coward1 trait description. That is because before commenting out the triggers I used to remove unfair coward traits with the console give_trait command and deleted the "Epithet Coward1_epithet_desc" because otherwise I wouldn't know the surname of family members not present in the family tree. Eventually there were so many cowards that I grew bored to check each and every FM and so I commented out the triggers. Now I don't know if that "Epithet Coward1_epithet_desc" can really make any difference, I would be surprised if it does as its purpose is just to give "the Coward" title to people who gain the coward trait. I will make some tests later on today and post the results if I can figure out something as I find it very strange that it works for me and not for others.

Edit: I did few tests by making a back-up of my export_descr_chatacter_traits.txt and replacing with yours, without modifing anything. Started a new campaign with your file and played several turns autoresolving most battles and playing a couple on battle map (one retreating as soon as it started while having good ods, I won the other but without making the general fight). Tried it with roman and spartan campaign. The result is even while using your files I could not reproduce a coward even while trying to do so. So I have absolutely no idea what's wrong in your game, while using your files the fix still works for me.

I tried the brave cheat, but I doesnt seem to be able to add it to the Cowards or non-Cowards even, what's up with that?
What I'm writing is the following: give_trait "charname" Brave1
I do not get any error messages, nothing happends, the trait isnt added to the proper character

I have to take that back
The trait is given. The first time i write the cheat, the coward trait dissapears, the char name doesnt change though. Write the cheat again, and the char will get "leads from the front". Everything is in order

This is not save game compatible, is it?

I'm also getting the "harsh" trait waaaay too much; it's even being given to generals who are not sitting in towns.

It is save compatible, you can continue your campaign but all the family members that got the coward trait will keep it unless you remove it with console command give_trait. But the fix will prevent any other member to get the trait.

About the harsh trait, there are 2 of them. There is Personality_Harsh and HarshRuler. The Personality_Harsh (shown in game only as "Harsh") is given randomly as a personality character trait and it doesn't matter if your general is in town or not. It increases the chances to get HarshRuler trait too. If you meant the HarshRuler one it probably depends on the happiness and tax level of the town they're in.

Hello, I think I installed the hotfix correctly, and when I started 2 new campaigns, none of my generals got the coward trait even after fighting several auto-resolved battles. But, in my current Armenian campaign, my Generals continue to get the Coward trait even after I moved all the files into the main installation 3 times, just to verify it was installed.

Edit: It is working in my current campaign, I just needed to end the turn before it took affect.

Is that general exterminating populations too? Because im pretty sure that increases the chances for "harsh" as well

If you think your getting too much of a trait, search through teh trait file, and look at the triggers. Backup if you make changes though.

My god Scipio the Younger's branded as a coward! AAAHHH!!!

I solved this problem by playing around in the descr_character_traits file. The only reason my (Spartan) Generals were becoming Cowards was because they werent able to kill anyone when my whole army killed at least 10% of the enemy (that's one of the current conditions). Imagine killing a small stack which doesn't require all your units to defeat - your general wont need to fight but will likely be branded a Coward.

It's unrealistic, because it doesn't necessarily make him a Coward just for not taking part in the battle, and unfortunately the game doesn't handle non-mounted generals very well (he's always at the back of the fight - even if I put him on the front line and make him run through a unit in front). The traits are a good idea and make sense, I think they just need tweaking.

I changed it to > 90% of enemies killed and reduced the chance of Coward to 10%. Along the lines of:

    Trigger battle4
    WhenToTest PostBattle
    Condition GeneralNumKillsInBattle = 0
    and PercentageEnemyKilled > 90
    Affects Coward1 1 Chance 10

Also note that you are guaranteed (100% chance) of being a Coward if your General routs in battle, or withdraws pre-battle when the odds were good 3-1. Those are fair enough. The only problem is trying to rectify it - getting the 'Brave' trait is not easy to engineer.

I have an alternate to this hotfix. Sounds a bit lame but anyway.
U have to make sure the general/family member never leaves his troops alone. I mean u have to split the troops from the general not the general from the troops.
Im with the Seleucids atm and after building some Academies i get better/not so horrible family members now.
Also i have a general who was branded a Coward but after winning enough battles, heroic victories help too his Coward title got removed. However this happened only once until now.

One more worf to this COWARD thing, if I may...
Copletely removing the chances to get a coward trait seems a little bit forced solution to me.
I got the coward traits as well - this led me to this side of the forum -, and I got it in a battle where the odds were 10:1 for the AI (the general was traveling just with 2 units of cavalry to take his new position of governor, when was attacked by a full stack of macedonians), and he fought till the end, had nowhere to retreat, and in the end I was happy that he routed instead of dying (and loosing one of my best generals and governor). So I got a 4 stars general with the Coward trait, wich was a dark spot in his military career (-3 troop morale)

Therefore I also want to fix this problem, but STILL, completely reducing the chances of cowardice to 0 is too much. I think that there shoud be included an odds monitor here:

    Trigger battle7
    WhenToTest BattleGeneralRouted
    (oddmonitor)
    Affects Coward1 1 Chance 100

I am no scripter, so can anyone who know scripting give me a syntax for inserting an odd-monitoring there? And possibly a line which monitors if there was possibility of retreat or not?

In order to avoid getting "The Coward" tittle, I often lead the battle and attack enemy with smaller amount of troops. However, it takes me some delay turn indeed in order to split and merge troops.

By the way, any one got the event Eagle lost? I attacked the city where The Roman Eagle brought to, but I couldn't find the Eagle there.

    Thanks a lot,

    I love RSII, amazing game!
