I have just finnished an amazing novel called "The Call of Prophecy" which is part of a book series called the Saga of Caliyon. In this world the Three Creator gods, Deimar (Creator of life and all that is good), Sarik (Creator of death, and all that doesn't have life), and Ethoni (Righter of the balance) rule the world, but when Sarik delves into creating unlife, the balance is upset and in an attempt to right the balance all three were trapped and the righting power of Ethoni, magic as it is called, seeped into the world to influence forever the elves and dwarves and create a third race, the Dragons. The human realm, Lorenth, expanded dramatically and soon the Corruption found itself a conduit, a crafty and arrogant seneschal named Dean. To find out what happened you're just going to have to read the book but I think that the way the story ended was a fabulous way to start a Total War mod campaign, with the realms ready for war, and evil reaching the peak of its power. Below I'll include a basic lost of factions, and cultures. I'll also post a link to a page about the book: http://www.amazon.com/Call-Prophecy-.../dp/1440191840 (The book might be available only in Canada, but its a good read and has an excellently described and developed world.
HUMANS:
Lorenth: Led by the aged King Arimas, and his expecting wife Verona, Lorenth is a just Kingdom where the truth of the good god Deimar has been explained as well as the slowly being released god can explain. Its army is based off of disciplined infantry, powerful short-range missile troops, and small but effective cavalry units as well as the highly effective and virtually unbeatable Royal Guard. Will include many hero figures from the book such as the leaders of the border armies, Arimas himself, and significant persons mentioned throughout.
Innin: A tiny realm comprising of one large settlement and a few villages this is the faction led by the once charismatic but twisted Seneschal Dean, who has now turned into the conduit of evil known as Kaaldean who commands an undead army. Its army is based off infantry, just like Lorenth, bur of a less disciplined variety. May end up with huge armies of the undead scripted in once Kaaldean summons them in the story. They have limited cavalry, but are the only faction with war machines. (By that I mean scorpions) Have an elite branch of assasins know as the Drucharii who later become the Order of the Black Rose. Insanely skilled, and leathal at close and long range, might even be a match for the more disciplined Royal Guard.
ELVES:
Illu'Dar:The woodland elves with a matriarchael society; they rely heavily on mages, archers, and the aid of dryads, elementals and treants. They have little or no cavalry. Led by Cheyandra Silversong. This faction also features many heroes, and will have units that will be a little challenging to make, but a clever modder should be able to cope. They aren't very agressive, but are skilled in martial skill enough to effectively defend their homeland.
Dsa'carii: The frost elves of the North. Have a fairly conventional society but due to their isolation, love of learing, and mastery over the elemental sphere of magic they rely almost exclusively on mages for their armies, and so will suffer in hand-to-hand combat. Also home to several heroes, including a guild of twelve mages who have adapted a dragon form as their shape-shifting form, one of whom is a main character.
DRAGONS:
Frostspire Clans: Led by the fearsome golden dragon Valkyyrak, this will be among the hardest faction to make, due to the aerial, and missile capabilities of the dragons. This has a totally unique culture and settlement type, which will need to be custom made. Each dragon has their own special abilities, and each can be made with some clever modeling and scripting. Has among the most heroes of any faction.
Souther Hill Clans: These are dragons who have moved away, and because of the Corruption have become violent, irritable, and highly tempermental. They are led by the bronze dragon Karros, youngest son of Valkyyrak and a skilled fighter, however close to the end of the story he reaches an untimely demise at the hands of a Innin scorpion. This could be scripted in, and these dragons will be easier to manage as they don't have the extensive abilities their northern cousins do because of their lack of contact with the elves.
There are also dwarven clans, but I still have to figure out how to deal with the many clans, and how to organize them. Note, I can't support this at the moment as I'm busy with BRITANNIAE: INVASIO SAXONUM, but I thought this would be a good idea.
