Gods, I sure am frustrated with the state of this game. Here are some of the issues that have recently been bugging the hell out of me (I'm not using any mods):
- Battles with AI-controlled allied armies are practically unplayable. Your so-called "allies" will direct their artillery fire without regard for other allied troops that might be standing in the way. In my last battle, an allied Polish army that came up to "support" me inflicted 5 times as many casualties on my troops as the opposing Russian army did. Lame.
- In another battle also involing allied troops, an army of mine rushed to help defend a large Hessian star fort from a French attack. I tried to get 2 batteries of horse artillery into the fort as quickly as possible to use grape shot to pulverize any French infantry that made it through a breach in the wall. Unfortunately I couldn't get my artillery to move into the fort because they kept getting stuck at the entrance. I ended up having to blast out a section of wall to make a hole that my batteries could use to move into the fort. Stupid.
- Why does the AI think attacking a besieging French army (consisting of several French guards regiments and 4 batteries of artillery) with nothing but a fort's complement of Hessian armed citizenry on turn one of the siege is a bright idea?
- Occasionally, horse artillery somehow gets stuck while unlimbering and then remains in a "half-limbered" state, unable to fire, move or limber, effectively rendering it unusable for the rest of the battle.
- Fresh units coming up as reinforcements during a battle sometimes appear right in the rear of an enemy army that is deployed on the extreme edge of the battle field (i.e. an entire map's length away from the nearest friendly unit). They will then merrily walk onto the battlefield in an agonizingly SLOW manner and be blasted to pieces the moment the player gains control of the newly arrived unit. Stupid ... RETARDED even.
- Sometimes, when rushing a bunch of units into a fort, they will run a couple feet, then stop for a few seconds, the run another couple feet, then stop, then run, etc. etc. The workaround is to let them run all the way to a point just OUTSIDE the gates, THEN have them actually run into the fort. I can live with that, but it's still a bit silly.
- Sometimes a unit of infantry deployed on the wall of fort will utterly and totally annihilate itself ... by walking down the stairs and then instantly dropping dead at the base of the stairs. WTF?!
There a more issues, but I don't remember them all right now and you probably know most of them already, so I'd be telling you nothing new anyway. Anyhow, the point is that while this game is mostly playable, it is still nowhere near in an acceptable state. CA, please devote some more time toward fixing this game. The remaining bugs are keeping this good game from being an utterly awesome game.
