For those of you who don't know, this is a documentary based off of Sebastion Junger's War. My brother's copy just came a couple of days ago and I'll probably crack it open tomorrow or so. Anyone watch it yet?

I've watched it. It's incredible. Not much like it out there.

I think we live in a great age. Never before in history have we been able to get so close to the battles that our soldiers fight, to actually see for ourselves what it's like out there, to understand how the soldiers feel and what they think and how they cope with it all. One part in particular really struck me:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
When they head out on that operation and are ambushed from all sides by the Taliban, and (I forget his name) the sergeant is killed in the bushes. Then afterwards, again, I forget the name, but one of the guys just breaks down, and I don't mean this in an offensive way, but he just cries hysterically, completely shaken. I think sometimes we forget that our troops are human too, that events such as these do affect them, even if PTSD is reported in the media far more than before. A very poignant scene.

I'm really grateful to the journalists who make such documentaries. The risks they take to tell these guys' story, risks they aren't expected to take, it's incredible. It's also not a documentary trying to make us think a certain way, or persuade us that certain things/people are good and certain others are bad; it's just showing us as it is, no cherry-coating. I can't thank them enough.

As a documentary I think it falls short. The narrative of it falls apart. Its more a series of visuals which conveys the emotional stress of war very well. A supplement to the novel. If I hadn't read the book prior I think I would have been lost on the over arching narrative of the deployment in the valley.
