medieval total war 1 load screen

i can start the game up fine. but the load screen after i select a faction takes forever. any ideas on how to fix this. i heard it had to do with newer drivers but i don't want to downgrade and have my other games affected. im running windows xp 32 bit btw. i can play shogun just fine its just medieval which was my favorite of the whole total war series.

If you don't use AGP card try to disable AGP acceleration in the DirextX properties (dxdiag.exe). It helped me a little. Before, it was @30s of waiting and 5s of loading. After - @15s of waiting and 5s of loading (Mobility Radeon HD 4650 1GB, winXP 32bit)
