The eastern flagons dripped the eastern wines as the servants poured an other round of cups for the governor and his guests. From the balcony, the city of Dyrrachium laid dormant under the moonlight. Herrenius drank from his goblet the sweet beverage, satisfied.
The night reminded him of the day of his departure, his family gathering to celebrate his election as governor of the new province of Macedonia. They gave him their best wishes and blessings, expecting this to be the start of a rise to the top of his political career. He did not see it that way. Earn gold, gain renown, build armies and expand the empire. What for? What is the point of such ambition? The wine and food of that dinner was just as sweet today as it would ever be.
There, away from the chaos and blood from the Carthaginian War, Herrenius could do what he did best: Enjoy himself; and as he finished the last drop of that delicious wine, all he envisioned for the future was to have many more nights of peace and pleasure.

A letter arrives bearing the seal of the consul
Sp. Herrenius
Recent developments at Emporiae has shown that our governors abroad may not be up to their tasks of protecting Roman interests. I am therefore asking for you to present evidence that you are not only strengthening Dyrrhacium but also making ample preparation against a potential Macedonian attack. As you yourself no doubt are aware, the Antigonid dynasty has been long eyeing Roman occupation of the western Greek shore with suspicion, and to grow complacent now on the front would spell inevitable doom, if not at the hands of the Macedonians, then before a court after your governorship is over.
I implore you to consider your precarious position.
L. Aemilius Scaurus

Pallas folded the letter and cast it into the fire. Oh how easily things were swayed at home and abroad. If Septimus, the former lion of the Senate, could fall on his own sword after conquering all of Spain, then what was there to stop the Senate from the doing the same to him? And HE only has a tiny town in the middle of Ilyria. Hardly worth noting. Though if he an excuse, a reason to pursue the enemy and bring the fight to the Antigonid homeland. Then, things may turn out differently. And if he received official Senatorial sanctions, then he need not care for the voices and opinions of men such as Scaurus, and this Poplicola who imagines himself savior of Rome from a single victory against the Punics.
A messenger came in and told him of the Macedonians that have been sighted near Dyrrhacium. A smile curled on Pallas' face. The gods have given him a chance to do what Septimus could not: a Senate sanctioned war of destruction and annihilation.
Assemble the army. We're meeting the enemy head on

Consul, you won't like what they're saying about you in Rome
Is that so?
The messenger handed a scroll to Pallas. It was one of the more recent scribe notes from the Senate. What caught his attention was not Licinius' remark about him razing all of Macedonia, rather, it was Poplicola's suggestion that the soldiers be summarily executed for exacting their vengeance upon the populace. This was war! Wars are meant to become ugly. Discipline maintained on the field is far more important than the lives of the civilians who dared to resist.
Tell the men that Poplicola has made his decision, now let him enforce it. Oh, and send word to the Senate as well. I will have this war fought in my way.
Sir, he has been consul five times. He is a man of tremendous dignitas in Rome
And I saved Rome from Gracchus' mobs. Let Poplicola rage all he wants. In the end, when I have conquered Macedonia and his lasting legacy was defeat at the hands of Hannibal, then we will see just who has more dignitas
