Default My own two cents on SPQR 5.0

I just have to throw my two cents in and say this mod kicks a$$! I am currently playing the Julli on H/M, and I instantly noticed the difference in game play. It is much more challenging, the AI does not seem to be as suicidal. I love the fact that all units put into a training are available the next turn, which cuts down on waiting to get to the good stuff...huge battles! Peasants are no longer available, but town watch is, making taking cities much more practical and less costly, unlike in RTR 6.0 were neither are available forcing the player to either leave behind seasoned veterans, or merchs which can cost a fortune (don't get me wrong, RTR 6.0 rocks too, I just personally found this to be annoying).
Last but not least, the units skins are excellent. Although they may not be 100% historically accurate (how ancient soldiers looked is always in dispute among historians anyway), they still look great on the battlefield adding to the excitement.
All in All this is an excellent mod that breaths new life into what is for most of us and overplayed game.

Thanks, Glad you like the mod. 5.0 was the best I COULD WITH 1.2.

6.0 will be a new experience with the 1.5 patch and new map. And of course new victory conditions and garrison script that works. No more seiging cities and having no fight. lol

Practice on 5.0 to be ready for 6.0 the last and greatest IMO of all the SPQR versions. Also whats nice is the Battle difficulty is fixed in 1.5 so no more worrying about M/H/VH issues.

But I would suggest playing on Medium as the AI gets too many bonuses with Hard and VH IMO. And since SPQR is about gameplay I think the higher levels ruins it almost as bad as having Screeching women! lol

Well it just depends on how long your campaigns take. I never finished a campaign yet, but that is mainly because SPQR isnt finished yet. lol But My campaigns would last weeks. SPQR 6.0 is getting CLOSE to Beta testing. I want to make sure I add all the nice tid bits.

Good news is that there will be MORE animations in 6.0, A neat Gladius animation, hoplite, phalanx animations, lots of new animations. The Gladius animation is AWSOME BTW, Very realistic, I gave the animator a Video a Roman reinactors fighting. The animation is nice Push with the shield then stab to the head, guts, or groin. Very impressive and realistic!

Oh, well only if you guys could see how well 6.0 is turning out........... lol Thats the devil in me. ;-)

Did anyone here ever play Praetorians?
The game was released about a year before RTW, based on the campaigns of Julius Caesar. I personally thought the game was good. The graphics were excellent, the game got right to business; eliminating the tedious business of too indepth resource managment, all you had to do was capture town centers from were you could recruit but only until you drained the town population. This forced the player to carefully plan what units to recruit. The AI was pretty challanging, requiring the player to utilize various battlefield tactics to gain victory.
However, were the game totally failed was in re-playability. Once you completed the campaign, that was it, if you replayed it would be the same campaign. There was only three skirmish options as well.
RTW succeeded were Preatorians failed, adding almost infinate replayability. SPQR 5.0 succeedes in bringing back advanced strategy while simultanously bringing back the "get down to business" feel of Praetorians.

p.s. - I know I already praised SPQR, but this was an afterthought.

Welcome to SPQR! Many of us here are former RTR players. Don't get me wrong, RTR is a great mod but if you have an itch for giant battles and a challanging AI, then you're at the right mod.

I think the best thing about this mod is that it's challanging in actual battles and battle strategy, instead of limiting units with turn build time. I would strongly suggest to follow the SPQR house rules. They make the game more fun, challanging, and realistic:

Yep this is definately my favorite mod. I really like the flagbearers, and now I can't stand those big bouncing banners. The larger units sizes makes it easier to use archers IMO and also makes them more deadly. Nothing like seeing 1500 arrows flying toward the enemy

This mod will be greatly improved with 1.5. I am looking forward to version 6.0.
Great news on version 6.0 LT. It's time to move on from 1.2.

I also forgot to add how I love how LT got rid of the pub-less commentator that screams "The day is ouuuurs". He is also famous for many other sounds. Unfortunantly the same voice-actor can still be heard when you have a light-infantry commander, but its not nearly as annoying.

yah i really love this mod, the battles are so much more intense, they look more realistic and you're always in a big battle...which adds to the realism...the 0 turns is amazing!

    cheers!

but question...how come a Roman legionary only has 62 men? shouldn't it be 82???

and the Greeks didn't use a phlanx at this time?

I couldnt imagine spqr on 1.6, sometimes in spqr 4.6 i used to be attacked by 3 stacks on a city siege but i could defend it because the ai only built siege weapons for 1 army. Now that they build siege weapons for all armies :O its actually going to be a challenge defending cities.

    SPQR 5.0 rocks!!

I'm really looking forward SPQR 6.0 just to see what CA did with the last patch.

I refuse to play RTW vanilla since the 1st version of SPQR.

If the last patch resolves most of the crititical problems then with SPQR mod this should be the ultimate RTW experience, the way it should have been released to begin with.

Even more so when you activate the garrison script. BUt that is only for HARDCORE players. everytime you get right next to or siege a city it pops up a garrsion, sure its a garrison like archers etc, but none the less no easy sieges for Hardcore play! And its optional since the script doesnt need to be activated to play the regular SPQR. I was going to add it to 5.0 but never got it working until after release. sorry. 6.0 will have it and it makes sieges FUN again and BLOODY. I fear my kill ratio will drop badly with 6.0. ;-)

I second that question. If for example I played the Gauls in my next campaign, will I have several full stacks along the Jullii borders that I had to deal with as the Jullii?
