    Default Facing Large Infantry Armies?

Hi, I'm a new to multiplayer for Rome: Total War. I'll like to know what strategy/army you should use in a game (e.g. 15k on CWB) when you see your opponent's soldier count sky rocketing up to two thousand? I've seen pike factions use this to protect against cavalry, sometimes Romans using it, and I'm not sure what to do.

Should I simply try to fight fire with fire and go with more lower quality soldiers?

For now, all I'm doing is just going with 6 infantry, 4 archers, and 4 calvary at g/g since I'm not good enough to start experimenting with the game.

Could you first elaborate on your reason to play 15K CWB on Huge Scale? For a new player that wants to take down Roman infspams i suggest Sele. Also you should always have at least 6 GG archers in a CWB match, unless you are rushing. Even then you should have some for lowering the morale of enemy units. Your key units will be your G/G Catas. use them to take down any hostile cavalry units and then charge the flanks of engaged infantry units. Nothing can beat cataphracts in hand to hand combat save for Gold Gold maidens or Chariots so you should not have a problem. i am a bit worried about the scale you play though. Because the units are larger they will move slower and that will affect how much effort it costs to manage them. I believe that it would be better for your micro developement if you switched to normal scale. That will also stop people laughing and quitting your games once they see the unit scale involved.

Actually, I think I was on Large when a Macedonian player had 1.9K men. I'm assuming he had 6 Royals, 6 Phalanxes, 4 Calvary, and 4-6 Cretians. O.o
Another time was against Thrace, another time was against Rome. I remember the Rome game being 20k I think, all on large.

But the only way theyd get over 2000 men on large is if theyd spam legionary first cohorts. and legionary first cohorts suck very badly. Stats are worse than urbans and they cost more. dude Cataphracts would that up. Go try em. Make sure you hold ALT down while giving an attack order to activate their Armor Piercing Mace attack. one unit of GG cata will take out at least 2 GG units of First cohorts in melee, and considering that a GG first cohort costs over 2K and a gg cat costs a little over 1,6K you should be golden.

Hmm, let me play some games on Friday, and then actually record specific details. Sorry for the lack of info, and TY for your responses.

If your opponent is going pike heavy, then go for legionaries if you're seleucids or urbans if you're rome. Legionaries are the phalanx killing units out there. Or you could go archer heavy as well with enough cataphracts and pikes of your own to deter cav rushes. Go with 6 G/G archers and shoot him to death. If he only has 4 cretans, then you'll have a field day on him

How is 2000 possible in large unit sizes? Must be buying all pikemen or peasants or first cohorts. That'll have no money for upgrades. Try taking a "standard" Rome army, 4 urbans 3/3, 4 preat cav 3/3 and 6 3/3 archers. (3/3 means gold swords and gold shields). Avoid combat, shoot down the rear, exploit with cav, and kill the survivers with inf and cav.
Or if you are really lazy take half infantry and half cav.

    Edit:

You know that you can only have 20 units max right? Anyways, just use a normal army. Really, a normal army beats all your opponents army.
