Post proposed or old anthems that you think should be (re)-instituted.

A Patriotic Song. The Anthem of Russia untill 2000. I think it sounds far more awesome than the current Soviet one, it's far more grand and majestic and ''Russian'', stemming from Czarist times.

    Wien Neerlands Bloed

Dutch anthem of the 19th century. Whilst I love the Wilhelmus, this, like the Russian one, simply has a far more grandiose feel that makes it awesome. A lyric change would be best and I'd love to see this reinstituted as some official song, not necessarily the anthem.

    Russian Imperial Anthem

    Brilliant and dramatic.

The present "soviet" anthem is what russians want. The Patrioticheskaya Pesnya always failed in inspiring the people, it always felt unnatural for them.

I also don't really keep track of 'former' anthems, I only know which I really feel 'fitting' for that particular nation. One prime example is the Italian one.

When I think about it, I can only come up with the soviet/russian and die stem van suid-afrika/Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika which were changed.

United States old National Anthem, My Country Tis of Thee

Yes I know it was song from a theme used by many Euro monarch countries at one time, still used by Great Britian, but it does remind us of our colonial roots, and it's far more beautiful than a silly song which sings about a gosh darn flag, sings about the nation itself, people, the treasures, values, which I value more than a stupid flag. But I guess a song about our country is not worth keeping... never liked the fact the Star Spangle banner was sung to a pub song none the less, so American I guess.

I think England should adopt Land of Hope and Glory (A patriotic song set to the tune of "pomp and circumstance) as its specific anthem within the United Kingdom, I mean Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own don't they? This would be an excellent occasion to actually bring to the stage an anthem that is actually good. Which most national anthem, including that of my country, are not, they are boring and... boring

Some stupid flag? Dude, the flag is a symbol of all that you were just talking about. How can you not like a song that is inspired by this flag and was written by a man who was watching a battle in the War of 1812?

n a 2009 poll conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center and publicized just two days before Russia's flag day (22 August), 56% of respondents stated that they felt proud when hearing the national anthem. However, only 39% could recall the words of the first line of the anthem. This was an increase from 33% in 2007. According to the survey, between 34 and 36% could not identify the anthem's first line. Overall, only 25% of respondents said they liked the anthem.[71] In the previous year, the Russian Public Opinion Research Center found out that 56% of Russians feel pride and admiration at the anthem, even though only 40% (up from 19% in 2004) knew the first words of the anthem. It was also noted in the survey that the younger generation is the most familiar with the words.

I disagree about the Patriotic Song -- in my opinion it's very generic and unimaginative. That said, the old Soviet anthem isn't my favourite, musically, and the new words aren't as good as the original.

Musically the Tsarist one is of course the best of all three, but unfortunately doesn't make much sense in the RF. Unless we replace the word Tsar with President... or Prime Minister...:

Also, I've yet to hear a better rendering than at the end of Tchaikovsky's 1812 overture.

I agree about the Wien Neerlands Bloed, however.

Well, it is a 19th century opera piece. Hardly the pinnacle of originality.

    Re-institute the monarchy. Problem solved.

Bit hard to turn that into an anthem though.
