If they are men, they should have the same name as their father. So just go look on the family tree and find their father's last name. Obviously, if their father was also "the Lazy," you'll have to do some detective work further up the line.
I am not positive about this, but I've noticed that children of sons-in-law from other kingdoms (So my Portuguese princess marries an Aragonese general) don't seem to always have the father's name. I think they actually get a random last name from the Portuguese family name lists. I know for sure that happens with girls, though I'm not sure about boys. But if that is the case, you'll need to keep track of those boys' last name before they come of age in case they lose it. Just make some (every 10-15 years or so) backup saves so that you can always recheck older family trees.
Yeah, I tried that, but the adopted guys have their own surnames. So, looking in my family tree cant be done![]()
And I have checked that I dont have saved games so old for him not having the name.
So, there is no way out of the game? character must be writen somewhere, isnt it? some file or something
data\text\names.txt
You have to put the name in curly braces like:-
William af Brahetrolleborg
{af_Brahetrolleborg}af Brahetrolleborg
so
Code:move_character "William af_Brahetrolleborg"
but names.txt shows all the possible names (I guess the game chooses the names from that file)
but not actual names they have in my campaign.
the problem is that I don't remember the surname of the character, and now is called "the Chivalrous". He is adopted, and has no children...
aparently not XDEdit: Ishan, did you even bother to read his post?![]()
I've read something about a list_characters command, but even if it's there it'll require a show_me_how script to use.
BTW: Wives always carry the name of their husband, unless it was decided otherwise at start. Won't help you now, but might help later on, just get your adoptees married right away.

The Enemy of Human Souls
Sat grieving at the cost of coals;
For Hell had been annexed of late,
And was a sovereign Southern State.
The only way I can think of is to open the traits file, find the trait that gives the character the epitaph and use the remove_trait console command to remove it. His surname should then show up. You can then use the add_trait console command to give him the trait and his epitaph back.

Oh god how could I forget that![]()
XD
nice try XD
Sorry guys i have no excuse but to say i didn't read the post, only read the thread title.
Anyways that's not a problem surname gets hidden when that particular character gains an epithet & characters that have epithets(e.g: Rufus the Killer) will use only the name:
Rufus
For kings/heirs must have their familiy name specified. It can be found if you go to family tree and hover your mouse over the king's daughter or wife's portrait.
Hope that helps.
Edit
Late in Answer it seems.![]()
I had this problem just now trying to find what the name of my dynasty would be if I married adopted King who also had an adopted son and adopted grandson...none of them ever married.
So I just save game, then toggle_fow and look for princess on map- then use character_reset on diplomat and move him to princess and then marry to the character in question, she assumes his name. Works fine! Otherwise it was hell trying to figure out those 3 names.
I have always moved or used other cheats on characters that have epithets without knowing there surnames.
When using a single word name don't use quote like for William the Mean you use:-
If the same contains the surname you use quotes, say William of Canterbury:-Code:move_character William xyz,abc
Code:move_character "William of_Canterbury" xyz,abc
You can remove traits without knowing their names by selecting the character when he's alone and typing -> remove_trait this "nameoftrait"
Exactly what I'd been going to say, k/t. For some commands you can use the name placeholder "this" (without quotes). This doesn't work with move_character, but it does with giving traits and ancillaries. Note that sometimes your character will need to be outside of a city for "this" to work with some commands.
I don't think removing titles is possible. When a character gets a title, "the Merciless" for example, even if you remove "StrategyDread 3" trait character's name will still carry the title, you can only replace it with another title, for example if you add "StrategyChivalry 3" afterwards your character will have "the Chivalrous" title. But I could never return a character's own surname once they achieve a title. Please PM me if you find a way to do that.
